Hi Guys,

Yanking these ditchers off this old planter this morning.

It must have been darned dry in eastern Colorado last year if the previous owner knew he would, in all likelihood, have to irrigate the crop up. Been there, done that. :>)

Allan, If you"re thinking about buying any land around here you should have just left them on. We haven"t had 1/2 inch of rain all spring. Pastures are brown, barley and oats are never going to come up. No reason in planting any corn in my mind. If we don"t get rain in a week or two, we won"t even get a first cutting of hay. Anyone who has a well already has it running for those of us on river water they"re talking July before we get anything. It looks rough around here.

Ouch!!

Guess it was a good thing I left that one over by Huntley lay. Even tho it was half alkali and prairie dogs. :>)

Yep. Probably a good thing. I just can't believe how dry it is. They say that the farmers over on the horse creek irrigation district will get 4 days of irrigation water. I can't imagine you can grow anything on that. If it rains in the next couple weeks things should come out alright. We just need it pretty bad right now. Oh well, not much you can do about it.

Allan, Nice tractors and equipment. The man who painted your tractors obviously had done that kind of work before. However, what I want to know is where in Nebraska do you find those nice hills and trees around your home? I never have been in Nebraska, but I drove across SD along I-90 and did not see any significant trees until the Black Hills, and not much in the way of trees then. BTW, we stopped at Wall, SD, and that place could show the guys at the Redneck Riviera (Myrtle Beach, SC) a thing or two about tourist traps! Hope you can make some dirt fly this year. KEH

Hi Guy,

There is a ridge of these goofy hills which start up on the reservation in South Dakota and cut across the northwestern edge of Nebraska. 'Bout 8 or 10 miles wide and it runs for some 200 or 300 miles (I think).

The call it the "Pine Ridge". Thought it was pretty too 'til I spent the first winter here. :>(

If there was only two of them on there he probley used them for when he cultivate's, we have two on our planter not that big. The tires on the cultivator run in them grooves keeps ya straight, no cultivator blight! well less, LOL

Hi Mike,

Hmmm, dunno. But, I think this feller was thinking irrigating because there were five of the rascals on there and covered everthing except the guess row.

If you were to try and use that thing around here you would need those ditchers every year. Not to irrigate but to drain the field of rain water. With over 60" of rain a year the only thing we irragate is flooding a rice field.

I have even seen fields in low parts of the state with a levee built around the whole field and a irragation pump set up to pump the water out.

Hi John,

Yes Sir, right here in the eastern part of the state the boys have to tile to get the water "off".

They just don't know what they are a missin', havin' all that rain and moisture. :>)

You mean there are places where you do not have to irrigate a crop up? Yezzz, that must make farming easy. Planted carrots this week. Got a soaker hose beside them and burlap covering them.

Hi Ken,

Watched my dad irrigate a crop of beans up when I was just a wee lad; 'course, there were no irrigation wells back then, let alone any pivots. He built a sled with 8” posts acting as runners for the ditching.

Since then, I've adapted his subsequent learned approach; if there is no moisture at planting depth for the swell, the seed stays in the bag. :>(

What's rain?? Is that that wet stuff that is cuttin' the dust on the road? 8^) In SE Nebraska we're up to 2" since last Sunday. Need it to slow down for a few days, then it can get back at it for awhile.
