Road Weight Restrictions

Here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the spring road weight restrictions are still in place even though we've had 3 weeks of unusually warm temperatures. Almost all of lower Michigan has had these restrictions already lifted. I'm looking to haul some heavy equipment but can't because of the weight limits. Does anyone know what procedures the road commissions use to determine when to lift these restrictions? Is it scientific, like checking ground temperatures at various depths at various locations, or more date and experienced based?

In the woods near Limestone, Alger County. Right in the snowbelt. The roads here have been dry and starting to get dusty now. The winter wasn't that cold this year and checking past NOAA climate data vs. road restrictions lift dates, the frost should be out of the ground by now. I know some loggers are getting mad since they don't get paid if they can't haul wood to the mills. Just seems strange this year. Maybe I've just got spring fever.

They go off here in Tuscola County Monday. We're east of Saginaw. They were waiting for a rain to drive out the last of the frost but I guess it is mostly gone now.

The federal highways have frost indicators in the which are holes in the roadbed that go down 8 to 10 feet. I dont know what is in the holes but my buddy works for the county road commission and he usally lets me know how deep the frost is. They also look at the secondary roads and wait for the to stop weeping -- Hope this helps --Rick Iron Mountain
