Mornin' Guys,

Aside from hangin' one more set of front-end weights on that rearin’ little guy down on the end, I am completely done with the tractor end of my newfound goal of getting back all my stuff and gettin' back out in the dirt once again.

My friend in Iowa is sending the weights probably sometime this month, I'll paint 'em up and glue 'em on and then I’m gonna stick all three of these old buckaroos back out in the mud where they were designed to live. :>)

The 966 turned out closest to the one I used to have; the H doesn’t have the bigger motor like my old one did and the 686 has the 310D instead of the 282D, which the old 656 had (I just can’t get used to that darned smoke at startup).

Can’t believe it has taken 3 or 4 years, but the nice part is all the great people I’ve met here and all the help I’ve received while working on these old rascals.

Heck with the tractors, tho. The biggest payoff is my new attitude. I’ve gone from thinking that I’m a washed-up old looser just waiting to die, to having a much-improved self-confidence and a whole brand new set of goals. I don’t ever wanna go back to the state of mind where I was at before stumbling onto this site and it’s nice people. Old tractors just make ya feel good!

Thanks everyone, gotta go out and fix some old machinery today!

Allan

Nice work and agree about the attitude. I really enjoy the fellowship on here too. Also, since retiring, it's keeping my computer keyboard skills intact for if I didn't do this I would almost never be on the keyboard and would probably forget how to type. Certainly don't wanna do dat.

Hi Allan,

Seeing those three Reds lined up in a row reminded me of looking at the wallflowers back at the high school dance...

Naw, just kidding. They look great. Sure wish you would take my 2510 and work your magic on it. It could use some new clothes and a rebuild. Maybe someday...

Allan, MY,MY,MY What a set of head turners. I am tickeled that your stable is complete, for now.
I am simply Aw struck on how darn well that 966 turned out.
I could have helped you seat those rings, down here today. Had a 20 acre hay patch drop in my lap the other day, was plowing it with a 12 ft IH 500 disk. It is heavy clay land with almost 2ft of new growth weeds and grass and the residue of last yrs Johnson Grass. My girl stayed back in the governor most of the day,It wasn't till we got up on the lighter end did she level off. OBTW The R.E.C. had redone the wire and poles and had about 10 acres packed harder than cement. Was running in L4 direct, and TA in tight spots and turns. I would Love to see your Darlin, streach her legs out on a good load.
Also got my new front HD rims and Airplane tires. on this week. She is ready for 225 MPH....Atleast the tires are. The rims are white so till I get them painted I guess she will sport the 1206 Look for this spring and summer. I will take some pick and post them later. I'll hollar later, Just don't leave without saying bye! Your friend!
Later,
John A.

Allan, I've got a question.... When you get your farm, and when you get a few cows, are they gonna be as shiney as those tractors? And do you wax your manure spreader on a regular basis?

Looks good ol' timer! They always tell me that it's half the fun just getting there. SO.... You've got a whole 'nuther half to go yet!

A nice looking GREEN and YELLOW (real) tractor would look good sitting in that line-up.

Hi PJ,

She's an ol' sweetie, that's for sure. I was very concerned, because for the longest while it seemed to have quite a whine in the rear end.

This tractor never turned a wheel for 5 solid years and then it was hauled into town on a truck to have the new engine put in.

Dunno, maybe it just needed to be run and lubed again perhaps, cause with each passing day, it seems to be getting quietier and is now back to a normal 'sound'.

Had lots and lots of little things to fix, but got 'em all done and it feels and runs just like a new one now.

Thanks for the reply,

Allan

The girls look great Allan! Why do I have the feeling that once you get back on the farm you just might find a need for another machine?
I don't really know how deep you are getting into it, so maybe you won't.

What equipment are you still searching for.....are you still thinking of a grain truck?

Hi Brian,

When I was farming for a living I had a 766D in the mix, but I was also farming 700 acres of irrigated too.

We only want to do a quarter section this time around and about half of that in grass, so I just don't think we need any more tractors.

Need the grain truck, the baler, swather and if I can round up an old F3 Gleaner somewhere, it would tickle me to no end.

Nice part about the machinery, so far I'm finding some very nice stuff for a little of nothing. Big farmers today don't wanna mess with this little 6-row machinery and it just brings pennies on the dollar at the auctions.

I.E. We picked up the same 6-row narrow planter that I had given $7200 for in the seventies for just $200. Can't beat that. :>)

An F3 shouldn't be to hard to find, however finding one that you won't have to tear apart and start over with is another story...
Did you hang a 630 corn head off an F3?!
Seems like she'd not like that a whole lot...

That set of machines you have there is about half what a new one about the size of the 686 would be! Made out pretty darned well and they look great.

Hi Ag,

A guy has gotta watch pretty close on the derned things. They came out with both a smaller four cylinder and that big 6 cylinder A/C diesel engine.

My old one had the 6 with a hydro and I planted 6 rows narrow and combined 4. Worked slickern' a sock on a rooster.

Also, Gleaner's down-front cylinder has to be one of the greatest innovations in the history of agricultural mechanization...

If you post what else you are looking for, I'm sure anybody on here would be more than happy to help you find them.

You are right, small agriculture is about the only way to get started anymore. Small stuff is "worthless". If it has an open cab, nobody wants to run it. I've seen some very nice swathers sell for $1000 because they have an open cab, next to a beat newer machine with A/C sell for 2-3 times that...

Hello allen,
Boy, I normally don't post too often, but after your post yesterday about your change of heart with horses and the title of your post today, I thought you must have taken a hard fall or something. Once I opened up this post, I was relieved to see what you were talking about.
I don't care what color a guy is into, that is one mighty fine set of machines. The best part is how you said that they"re gonna get dirty!!
That sorta thing is right up my alley. The only thing you could still use is a good set of sunglasses, so you can see where your going out in the field. All that shiny paint could sure blind a guy. On the other hand, you wouldn"t be able to see your watch then either. You'd have a perfect excuse to be out scratchin around all day long. Enjoy Brokenwrench

Howdy Allan,

I can't remember if you restored all those beautiful tractors or not but they seem to be missing something. Hmmmm.....what could it be? Oh yeah, I got it! They don't have the oil spots under them that every one I restore seems to get. Just finished up restoring a JD M for a guy (before the JD comments come, remember that I restored a Farmall A prior to this). Parked the M in my garage after runnin it a while and sure enough the oil spots magically arrived. Seems that an oil seal in the engine is leaking. After getting that thing all back together I really don't wanna tear it all the way back down, split the engine and replace a dumb old seal. OOPS! I'm starting to rant. Just wanted to say howdy and give ya a big congratulations there Allan. Didn't wanna start complainin' ha ha. God bless ya buddy.

Beautiful tractors Allen. Glad to hear that you found tractors and farming again in time, seen too many people with farming in the blood quit farming and end up quiting on life. It"s an amazing thing that once you are a farmer, you are a farmer for life.

Good luck ground hunting, find your own little paradise. If you ever make out to NE Colorado, look me up.

I was really impressed with the way that H was able to lift that planter off the trailer. It was a little dicey when the whole thing started sliding down hill in the mud, but we recovered! That planter looks pretty dingy behind sparkle of the 966.

That definetly was one of those "memory" moments. Tractor, loader and planter all reluctantly slidin' down the hill in the mud with both brakes locked. :>)

I gotta replace one seepy hydraulic hose on that planter, then I'm gonna twist 'er tail and we'll see what kinda air pressure that ol' gal has left. Bettin' she comes right up there. :>)
