I was turning the shell on an alternator so that the wire connections would be on the right location on a new alternator when it slipped out of my hands and the rotor slipped out of the brushes. How do you hold the brushes in so that the rotor can be slipped back into place? Help

Most have a small hole through the brush holder and rear alternator case so a stiff wire can be inserted to hold the brushes in the holder untill the alternator is assembled. Dont forget to pull that wire out before you test/install the alternator. The wire will cause a dead short across the brushes which will destroy the voltage regulator the instant you turn on the ignition. Been there..... Done that :)

Years ago I ran into an alternator where the holes through the rear case were hidden under small plastic plugs.

Jon,

Don't tell him to use a wire or a paper clip; that's just asking for trouble somewhere, sometime.

Get in the habit of using a toothpick or one of those plastic stingers that come with the new brushes.

Everyone wants to remember to pull 'er out, but we all forget from time to time.

Your right Allen, I have been buying brush holder assys from a jobber. quality and price is good, but the brushes are retained by a bit of paper clip wire. The problem is that this outfit only drills the holes in the brush holder large enough for that thin wire. I keep a couple of those used plastic stingers in a tray in the test stand to use when reusing a name brand brush holder. The regulator I cooked was on a freshly reworked 10SI Delco. It had a brand new jobber brush holder assy and fresh from the box regulator. I mounted it on the test stand and flipped on the fld power, saw the fld amp meter peg itself for a second, then dropped back to zero. In that instant I knew what I had done with no one else to blame. Removing the wire AFTER the test was no help at all. Walked around under a little black cloud for half a day after that one.
