If you are anywhere near any textile mills, looms use gears in the size range you mentioned. Most of the mills are gone now, in our area. Several years ago, a guy I know bought a building full of new gears for Draper Looms. He sold some to brokers to sell in South America & Mexico, & I think he sold the rest for scrap..... .

You don't give us any information that would be needed to work with, except "like in an axle reducer". Look for an old Allis Chalmers or an old Farmall. If you want something bigger, look for a New Holland Super 77 haybaler. Or the ring gears from an old road grader. If you want something smaller, look for an old pump jack, or the agitator gears from an old washing machine. Maybe a flywheel ring gear and starter pinion are good enough for you. There are lots of industrial supply dealers in surplus gearboxes on the net. Designing and manufacturing precision gears requires the highest of talents, so everyone tries to avoid them and use belts and roller chains.

man! you think big! grader ring gear: i wish i had an application for something like that.

I was thinking a big gear on the order of 12-18", and a matching small gear, with like a 6:1 or better ratio.

I dont want to mess with new gears, or having any built. my application has a limited budget.

thanks for the forcing of the re-think!

Like the other person said, how much hp is running through them, what input speed, etc.? Shaft size important? Sounds like a real small gearset to me, I was thinking a lot bigger too when I read your message yesterday. You really need to define your needs. Going to go in an oil bath? Using slightly chipped, or mounting yourself without good tolerances - you must have a real low speed & low-power requirement?

Check in a salvage yard for a combine final drive. Good gear reduction and a lot of strength. I've seen people use one with a hydraulic drive motor to make a bale unroller.
