I am considering buying (from a private party) a Cub Cadet model 2145 with a 14 HP Cummins/Onan motor. It's a '96 model with 107 hrs., and he's asking $2k, which seems about reasonable. But of all the Cubs I've seen, and research I've done on the internet, I can't find any other references to this particular configuration, and I'm a little worried about future parts/service availabilty, etc. Here are a few quick questions:

Was this an "oddball" configuration, or were they fairly common with this motor?

What has the reliabilty/longetivity record with this motor been like?

Why isn't Cub Cadet using the Onan motor in their current product line?

What was the approx. price of this unit when new (1996)?

Thanks for any help!

Mark

The reason Cadet used this engine was because
kohler was behind in production for a while and couldn't make enough for Cub Cadet's demand. The onan engine was their second choice to kohler.
These tractors sold well, and longevity has not been a problem. Cub Cadet is very good about supplying parts for older units. 2k seems a bit high as I think they sold for about 2400. new.
Check the price on a new 2155 and compare. The 2155 is basically the same tractor.

Thanks for the input on the 2145. I talked with a Cub dealer today, who told me the 2155 currently sells for $2899.... I said he was ~asking~ $2k; I actually offered $1750. The dealer said the Onan motor was slightly more expensive than the comparative Kohler or Briggs, and the parts would be, too.... But he also said they seemed to be slightly more reliable. I figure if the guy will sell it at $1750, I'll buy.

I USED TO WORK FOR A TRAILER TRANSPORT COMPANY AND THEY SOLD THERMO-KING REFRIGERATION UNITS FOR TRACTOR TRAILER RIGS. MANY OF THE "REEFER" UNITS WERE POWERED BY ONAN.THEY WERE VERY RELIABLE.WESTER AUTO(A SUBSIDIARY OF SEARS)USED ONANS ON THERE 20hp LAWN TRACTORS.I THINK CUMMINS BOUGHT ONAN.
