I keep seeing people constantly posting complaints about overseas buyers/scammers, and how sites should do more to protect this and that and be responsible for the postings/decisions they place.(this particular message isn't targeted at a posting from this site, but is kinda universal) I don't wanna be super rude or anything but at some point in time, people may have to realize that not everyone is honest and you have to be careful in internet deals. I recently saw a psoting where someone posted a message complaining about a site where they were sent a message/offer and had to spend a whole thirty seconds reading and deleting. This same site offers a lot of great things to buyers, sellers, collectors of items, and the person complained about this great injustice. Guess what, its part of doing business on the internet, if you don't think you can handle reading 1 or 2 junk mails to sell your item for free then DON'T POST! Sorry to rant, but some common sense goes along way.

I wont be redundant and rewrite my reply to jmeyer in his post below. Anyone can go there and read it for him or herself. What you say is right on, and why some folks think that the internet is above and beyond conventional buying and selling practices is beyond me. One thing everyone should realize is that what is happening on the internet is happening so fast that our legislators cannot possibly react fast enough to pass laws fast enough to keep up with the latest scheme or scam. They are also reluctant to over legislate to the point as to render the internet impotent and irelevant in the world of commerce. Therefore, it is incumbent upon all of us who use the internet to either buy or sell to learn all we can about the nature of the beast, and protect ourselves accordingly. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to know that if one leaves his E.Mail address out there for everyone and his brother to see, that he runs the risk of being spammed, or having unwanted E.Mail delivered. Is that any different than your insurance company or credit card company selling or sharing your name or credit info with someone else for profit? Indeed not. My mail box, out by the road, is full of junk mail on a daily basis, and I have to be carefull when sorting it out that I don"t inadvertently throw out the light bill with the solicitation for $1.00 per month life insurance, or the pizza coupons I will never use. Somehow it is my responsibility to do the sorting, and not the Postmaster or the mail deliverer. When E.Bay says, upon our initial membership application, that they will NEVER, EVER ask us, in a query, for our password or bank account number, we should then take it as gospel and when we do see such phisching expeditions, realixe someone is trying to scam us. At that point all we have to do is forward the text or simply ask eBay if this query is legitimate, and they will reply that it is not. The same goes with AKMED and his band of business tycoons. We do not have to do business with these people, and is we are remotely tempted, then it means we havent done our homework, and are too greedy or desperate ourselves, that we could fall for such nonsense. Your posting ID is "common sense", and that should be the driving force of all of us. We"re not kids anymore, and we dont need someone to hold our collective hands to make sure we dont do something stupid while conducting business. If we cant do business without doing something stupid, then we shouldnt be in business in the first place. If we want something so badly that we cant make an intellegent buying decission, then perhaps we shouldnt be out there buying stuff we dont know how to discern whether we are being scammed or not. Doing business, either as a seller or as a buyer requires a certain degree of common sense. While it is a law that we need liability insurance on our vehicles before we take them on the road, it doesnt take law enforcement to make us realize the reason why. If we dont understand it, then we really have no business on the highway to begin with. It is the same for doing business. If we dont understand why we do or don"t do some things for our own good, such as make sure the check is good, or buying sight unseen and expecting more, then we have no business in the arena. Gosh, I hope the whole world don"t percieve us as a bunch of ignorant farmers, and if they do, then shouldnt we take control ourselves and change that perception? If we leave it to everyone else, to provide the common sense and safeguards, then the perception wont change, as that proves we cant think for ourselves. The internet has a lot of built in safety devices, we simply need to educate ourselves and utilize them, instead of assuming that its someone elses balliwick.

Paul,

Get a "disposable" email address, such as Hotmail, and post it freely, as needed, for use on these boards, or in connection with any items you have for sale.

Do not give out your real email address except to trusted friends and relatives and legitimate businesses.

When the "disposable" email account becomes overwhelmed with junk, just abandon it, and make up a new account. Your primary email for close associates will not be compromised that way, and you won't have to bring those you are close to "up to speed" on a new email addy from time to time.

What ticks me off, though, is close friends, etc., that have my main email address and forward it freely to THEIR circle of friends, with the usual "garbage" email "funnies", in the "CC" header of the email.

On the rare occasion I forward some joke, or whatever, that I enjoy, I "cut and paste" the contents of the email into my new email, thereby stripping off the emails of all those who were listed in the original "forward", so I am not a party to spreading their email addys all over the net.

I don't know. I used to keep 2 or 3 emails but it was a nusiance to have to check them. Now I only use one and post it freely. My ISP has a filter that gets most of the bulk mailing and spam. I have my own filter set to block any forwarded messages from "friends" and "William Ransom" is permanently blocked. Now I only get the mail I want and that is enough to keep up with.

Bob, Your suggestion on E.Mail is good. I do just that, and it keeps my primary E.Mail clean. Lots of folks don"t know about secondary E.Mails so reading this post is beneficial to everyone. Ihave had to tell a few friends not to forward me jokes, attachments, and touchy feely feel good poems as most of it I have seen several times over in the last 8 years I"ve been on the net. Most of them have gotton the message and send me simple correspondence only. That along with spam guards, spyware, and pop up blockers have cleaned up my E.Mail and computer use considerably. I still get a letter or so from AKMED and his band of business tycoons, but it is at a bare minimum now a days, and managable.

I agree with you 100%, why in the name of blazes should an internet provider have to hold these people's hands. Most of us have a scammer within 20 miles of home, just as bad as the worst of them.

My advice to these complainers, if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. They are not business people, thus should go back to the hole with some bureauacrat. Makes one sick to see these people who worked 20 years for a yearly salery, vacation pay, paid hollidays, sick leave, etc., then got into internet trading, and want someone to hold their hand. They aint never going to be TYCOONS.

Hi Hugh,

You are correct. I installed this software to keep the bad guy out and got a message one day that xyz was trying to enter my computer. Cleared it and not long after it happened 2 more times.

Something in the alert led me to the fact that the computer was connected to my internet provider, meaning that they were a customer as I was.

I called the/my provider and gave them the cumputer's number and details.

Haven't had it happen since. Must have got him.

Apparently there are a whole lot of people who have had enough and decided to fight back. Quite often I recieve e-mails from people stating that they have suddenly inherited vast amounts of money and need an American bank to transfer the money into, normall I just hit delete and go on, but I decided to have some fun with the last one, and replied. Recieved a message just seconds later informing me that the message could not be delivered because the recipients mail box was full. Obviously, I wasn't the only one who replied.

Dr, Sportster, I agree with the 1-10% but only up to a point. If you ever look into any of those work from home online internet business's, you will find the percentage of scammers just went up. More like 99-100%.

Rusty, you couldn't get through cause I was busy talking to Sir Reginald MButu Harrison Namibwa, Barrister, about a deal he is setting up for me. He is the second son of the first wife of the late deposed leader of the tiny nation of Lawanda and the evil soldiers that took over and killed his father are after all his money, so he is making a deal to send it all to me. He has three wives and 14 kids and I am going to help set him up in business here at the local quik mart selling traditional African wood carvings, his wives are going to help cook, clean, and carry drinks to the pool this summer, and I've already got long sticks cut for the kids to herd my cows with. No more fence building for me. You guys will just be plumb sorry you didn't jump on this deal when I'm counting my millions. Hope this doesn't interupt my disability check. Anyway, I'll probably be sending you my next email from the Bahammas because Reggie said we were just THIS close to puttin this thing through. Something about some small closing fees or something, but hey, that's the cost of doing business on this large a scale. Be sure to stay in touch, ya'll.
