The oil pressure on our JD 5020 is around 20 psi running and drops to almost nothing when at idle. I use 15-40 good quality oil. If I went to a straigh 40 wt do you think that might give me a little more pressure? It is due for a oil change. Stan in calif.

Might pay you to drop the pan and check/replace the main and rod bearings. Also check the oil pump drive gear, and shaft for play.Might cost you $4-600 to do it now or $3-5000 for an engine if it spins a bearing or tosses a rod through the block. You should have 30+ psi running at high idle with warm oil,15 minimum at low idle.

What you suggest worked for me. Your pressure is really low; dangerously low. Been told that the min pressure is 10 psig/1000 rpm's to keep an engine lubed. Number is kinda low for me, but it's higher than what you're talking about. Once I learned of that number, I used it as a rule of thumb and went back to my old oil. But I have 15 psig hot idle now with it.
