My 8n tractor sometimes sounds like it doesn't always run on all cylinders. It is intermittent. I've replaced the plugs, cap, wires and cleaned the points but still have had no luck. Will the electronic ignition conversion kit solve this? Does the electronic ignition still require a distributor? Should I also replace the distributor shaft?

I had a similar problem and found that after 50 years, my TO-30 distributor was plum wore out. Imagine that! Damm thing only lasted 50 years. Had it rebuilt for $100 (new shaft and bushing) and added an electronic ignition and it runs like a top. Check the radial play in the shaft with the points initially in the closed position(i.e push it sideways). If the points open when you do this, rebuild the distributor.

Have you checked to see if you have a good flow of gasoline to the carburetor? Dirt or water in the carburetor? Air cleaner restricted?

I just looked at the oil bath and talk about dirty. Is there a way to remove the filter from the canister in order to be blown out?

Grove, Are you talking about the air breather or the canister holding the oil filter? They can both get gunked up pretty good. It just isn`t computing in this thick skull.

Coldiron,
I'm refering to the air breather. I changed out the oil at the bottom. I blew out the wire wool the best I could with an air hose. I'll look into the distributor as the others stated.

All, I appreciate the assistance. As for the age of the tractor it's only twice my age.

I believe that your rotor in the distrubetor has a clip that slips over the shaft under the rotor. Check to see if the clip is missing. The tractor will run without it but it is always out of time.
