Well I hate to sound like a preacher or try to tell someone what to do but after looking at these pictures you may reconsider how much you do with out using safety glasses.

I for one will admit I do not wear them every time I should.

These pictures were posted on the bulletin board at work. I marked out the names because this is the internet.

When I was going to Tech School, we had to watch a movie about a man losing his vision when a grinding wheel exploded... That movie was very graphic, but it made a lasting impression. I am used to wearing them, they are sort of like a seatbelt, you feel a lot safer with them on... I am constantly having to tell visitors & customers they must wear glasses if they come in the shop. They always Say " Oh I won't get anything in my eyes"... Famous last words..... . I tell them that it is there vision, but if they want to lose it,it is their business, but not at our shop.... On the same subject, I always wear safety shoes. I broke a toe years ago , when a small block of steel fell of a table, & I never want that to happen again. Amazing how bad a little toe can hurt !!!

I raised four boys that all got glasses in K or 1st grade. When in high school they got contacts. I had one huge battle getting them to cover their eyes when working in the shop after growing up without ever having to think about covering their eyes. It was the hardest thing to remember.

My son worked a temporary job and they gave him clip on side shields for his glasses. Been meaning to find out if OSHA buys that crap.

When I was in my teens (40 years ago)I was sharpening fence posts with a tractor mounted buzz saw. Dad always preached to wear safety galsses when operating it. suddenly an 8 inch long splinter ripped off the cedar post and struck end first in the center of one lens of the safety galsses I was wearing. The splinter broke in a couple pieces, and they also hit. I've worn safety galsses ever since when working with equipment. The prescription glasses I now wear full time are American Optical safety glasses, with the chanigng tint leneses. I really like them.

It's good to see there are some people who are safety conscience out there. I took some molten copper/steel in the lense of the right eye when a connection shorted while closing a box cover. The contacts took the worst but my optomatrist gives me heck every checkup. Dumb *ss invincable apprentice I was. Moaned and complained for a few weeks when hard hats and saftey glasses were made manditory on job/work sites in the mid 1980's. One day when pulling cable up a conduit. The pullers slipped and the end hit me square across the glasses. Safety glasses saved my right eye without a doubt. I used to make ear plugs out of damp cotton battan as an older kid and up until cheap effective comercial units were avalable. I still pass the hearing tests with only a -10 db in the left ear in one range. Lost that as a young kid driving tractor.

John... you are not preaching! You are mentoring! I think it is mighty fine of you to make mention of safety glasses here on YT. I think YT should put up a little window on there home page that is "the safety tip of the day" Old and young alike need to be reminded of safety and if nothing else instilled to take that "one second" to think before acting... there are millions of stories about injury, I do not have to start here, they are all after the fact. And, I have read here in the forum day after day about tractor rolls, engine bursts, PTO traps and more... Farming and old iron and soft human tissue are a volitile mix when not hazard assessed properly. I always tell my people "do you want to come home to your wife and kids whole each day...then take that second, there's no prfit for anyone if you don't, you are number one". And i supply them with safety equipment at my cost. By the way, I am a safety consultant, you and everyone out there in the workplace are the safety men Bravo to you! I think I will take it one more step and e-mail Kim about the safety tip idea, what do you think?

I work in a manufacturing plant, our company makes safety glasses, anyone can get them at Home Depot, for less than $10, and we also make safety glasses for little kids. Its better to be safe than sorry!

Let's see... prescription saftey glasses, Full-face shield when grinding, full-face tinted shield when cutting (torch), and a pair of Oakley motorcycle goggles with a prescription lens ($$$$) when on the ATV. I used to be young and fearless, now I'm just old.....

Funny, I was thinking the same thing (that I am getting old).

Only difference to what you use and me is I wear a set of M45 antifragmentation goggles on the ATV, still dont have to have the prescription glasses to see, except to read. Its not my eyes, its my arms are getting shorter :-).

All the time, the first time I had to lay on the Dr"s table and watch a needle coming at my eye and him telling me not blink or move while he dug the peice of metal out made a believer out of me
real quick.

Many years ago, we were building an ice fishing house inside a friend's garage, nailing sheet metal to the roof. The hammer slipped once (or whatever happened) and the nail embedded itself firmly in the ceiling of the garage. The safety glasses came out of the drawer after that experience.

Working outside most of the time I do like Roy said and wear the tinted safety glasses for sunglasses the majority of the time. When I was younger I didn't always wear glasses when I should have, be they tinted or clear, and wound up had both eyes scratched at least once years ago because of it. Then it was no fun being patched up for a week plus for it to heal. Those instances were way back before I started wearing contacts, at which point I got alot more conscience about wearing the glasses because with the contacts the slightest little thing would cause terrible irritation and often pain, not to mention the eye damage a piece could possibly do if it somehow got under the lens and got drug around every time I blinked.

John;
I Got on to wearing them more as sun glasses, got tired of breaking the expensive ones. The tinted safety glasses were a cheap option. One day while baling the 268 broke the flywheel shearpin and the loose end struck me in the glasses. Left a pretty big mark on the polycarb lense. Some glad I had them on. Don't do much on the tractors with out eye and hearing protection on. Stay safe, Roy

Well I don't wear safety glasses in particular but I do wear prescription glasses and I have them made to safety glasses specs. Does that count?

They have plastic safety glasses which can be worn over your perscription glasses. They provide protection from side and bottom entry which the perscription lenses do not

Thanks for posting this. I will think twice next time I'am working around my equipment and use safety glasses. Darn, I cant think what it would be like to loose an eye! Many a times when I'am using the grinder or wire wheel I dont use glasses cause it will only take a few min. to do the job but thats all it takes to have something like this happen.
Thanks Agn..
