HEllo all,I know I shouldnt post this but Im trying to fix a memorial to my Dad.He died in 99 and I have his flag that was on his coffin.I have built a display case for it and would like to put some of his old metals and badges in it and give it to my mom for her birthday,Problam is that all of this stuff was stolen whe nI was very young and niether mom nor I can recall everything he had.We do know he had a service meatl and rifle badge and that about all we can recall.I was told that my local Congress man could help, but when I went there he said in exact words,"I dont have time to fool with that right now, tell him to come back in a few weeks!"Needless to say I didnt vote for him!So anybody know of anywhere else I can contact to get these replaced,or if you were there, and know some of the thing s he may have gotten Icould find somewhere.let me know!I know he was in Cahm Rahn Bay between 65-68 in the #rd Army maintence Battalion, and he did see some action, but not much,he wasnt very decorated,by the Army anyways, but did his job just the same. Thanks!

John, I"m afraid I would have to announce very publicly that if my congressman "didnt have the time" to even review my request, that I would find time to vote for anyone else but him in his next election. remember, little men can talk loud even in a congressmans office. Theres nothing wrong with being heard. While your Dad may not have been highly decorated, he obviously did earn some medals. Perhaps his outfit would have records, and be able to point you in the right direction. Just make sure that if the direction includes going to your congressman, that you point that out to him the next time you face him. Perhaps a reminder of who he works for may be in order.

Hello John I was there in 69-70 with the 101st Airborne Division just out of Hue. If your father served a full tour there he probably received several medals and awards. Do you know the unit that his maintenance unit was attached to? Do you know where he was over there, up north or down south? You can serch the web if you know his unit and may find some information as some units have rosters of people posted with their unit. I live in Lowgap, NC about an hour from Winston and if I can help any way let me know. Also let me know the congressman if he is from NC and I will call him and let him know how I feel. Have a good one, Danny Hearl

I think you will have good luck by contacting the records center in St. Louis Mo. as someone else said. Forget the bozo you have for a congressman. Just don't vote for him. I believe that is how I got a copy of my DD-214. Your dad was in the same place I was, and the same years also. This is a good thing you are doing for your Mother. stan in calif.

In the early eighties I purchsased all my freinds dads WW2 ribbons[not medals]from the main exchange at Camp Lejuene.Someone told me I should have had documentation to purchase later, but at the time I just had his dads list.I also purchased generals stars for my leather jacket and staff sargents stripes to have abilitly to sneak into the staff club at Indian Head Maryland.Nobody ever asked for any documentation.Civilians work at the main exchanges and dont really care what you buy there just give a list of what you need to a guy on active duty.He will be glad to get them for you.

I hope that you post the name of your congressman and that everyone in his district that sees it writes him a letter or calls so he can figure out how to arrange his schedule. If not- he should have plenty of free time after the next election!

John,
I received excellent results with obtaining my
DD214 four years ago from the National Personnel Records Center, St. Louis, MO. The web site is
Link
As others have stated you must send a SF180 form
by mail or fax. I received a copy of my DD214
within 6 weeks. I had several phone conversations
with Harold T. Clements, Archives Technician who
did exceptional work considering a fire had destroyed 16-18 million records in 1973 of Army
and USAF records.I would recommend calling them
at the listed number on the web site to get
started and discuss your situation. After all of my efforts I found my DD 214. I wish
you Good Luck in your search.

You might try getting in touch with your Senator's office. Our late Great Senator Strom Thurmond could get things taken care of with a single phone call. Often, he would personally make a call later, to make sure the issue had been resolved.

In Tennessee there is a War Records office with the information you're looking for ( Tennesse vets only). Ours is located on the grounds of the State National Guard HQs; took them less than 5 minutes to come up with the information on my Dad; bet your state has a similiar office.

First stop, the courthouse in reply to John M, 04-05-2005 05:57:23
Gary's response was the first thing I thought of when I read your post. When I got out of the army I was instructed to file a copy of my DD 214 with my local courthouse. I'd check the county courthouse where your dad lived when he was discharged. My DD 214 had all my assignments listed, all my awards, etc. The formal request route through St. Louis took one of co-workers (she was doing it to get her grandfather's information) more than a year. As a man walking around in a free nation and free to express my opinions, I thank your father for his service.

Following your posting and replys. First off, admiral of you in what you are doing for your mom"s birthday... nine thumbs up! But those governement fella"s brushing you off, what"s up with that? Is it not "YOU" and every one else that pays his wages to do a job. Your families have served so that he can sit safely in cushy offices doing what? He has a job, he is hired to do a specific job description which can be summed up in "working for YOU"... Post the fella"s name and have him explain what he does all day long with "YOUR" money. I can not recall me paying taxes and consider it a donation to finance an individual to tell me to "take a hike". He must expalin himself and how well he is performing... if he is not performing to the full value of the $$$ YOU are putting up, FIRE him and let him go to the unemployment line and get brushed off! The bureaucracy quest you have been directed to undertake is well worth it as you will eventually get what you are looking for, call it an adventure, but as you go about the quest leave a smile with each counterperson, plant a seed of hope and not discontent, we are all doing the best we can while the clock is ticking and Mr. Congressman greases his lips at the table. My I suggest he goes out to find out who stole your dad"s stuff... and its these guys and gals that are voting to remove the cross from halls of justice because "it offends"... God Bless Your Dad, Your Mom and You!

John and all interested vets.

I spoke with the VA regional office and they advise the foillowing. The easiest way to obtain medals and awards for a veteran is to submit a letter to wit:

"As the legal next of kin I request that I be issued all award emblems that (NAME) was entitled to. A copy of the seperation document is enclosed."

Send this request and include the following information:
Vet Social Security number
DD 214
Service number
VA file number (get it from your regional office)
date of birth (DOB)
place of birth
date of death

Include your name, address and phone number

This letter ands information should be sent to the following address. The counselor indicated it be typed this way so you may want to copy and paste it. This info is specific to the ARMY.

US ARMY RESERVE
ATTN:DARP-PAS-EAW
9700 PAGE BLVD
ST LOUIS MO 63132-5100

Again this process takes time. I was told it could take a year to complete your request so be patient. Hope this helps

The form 180 is the "request pertaining to military records." It is available online as SF 180 on the link below, and has instructions for all branches. Try http://www.va.gov for more info

You can also try your local courthouse, (or wherever he lived when he separated from the service) everyone that leaves the military is encouraged to record their form DD214 (record of separation from military service). for this very reason. The DD214 will list all medals and awards, character of service, etc. Not all veterans record them, but most do. Once you get the info, the actual medals can be purchased without to much trouble. Also, most counties have a veteran's service officer, I'll bet the local VFW can help also.

Regarding recording a DD214 ... I am an Army Veteran, they used to encourage recording the 214 as a public document, but not any more. It has your social security number on it and you don't want that recorded for anyone to get to anymore.

Call your local VFW or American Legion Post. Either one should have a Service Officer that can help you do that. There is a form (108 I think) that needs to be filled out and mailed to St. Louis.

That is great what you are doing. There should be several ribbons/medals that would have been worn on his uniform and eligible for. Unit citations, good conduct medal (I assume), etc.

Here is a url telling of a certificate many veterans may not be aware of. It is a certificate for serving during the cold war era. This gentleman tell how to apply for one.

You can visit your regional VA office to request the information. In NORTH CAROLINA it is:

Regional Office:
Winston-Salem 27155 (Federal Bldg., 251 N. Main St.,)
800-827-1000

Try the toll free number if that is too far. They will advise you of the process, or of a closer location that can help you. In all cases be prepared to take some time. You will need a copy of you father's DD214 which is his discharge papers. If you have his military ID, turn it over. The military had copies of the 214 on the back of the ID for some vets. If you don't have that available, take his DOB and Social Security numbers. They will help file the request papers for you. This process takes time. They won't be able to give you the information while you wait. It could take months to hear back so be patient. It is worth the wait. Good luck

I did that, went to my local VA office, the guy there said I could save alot of time by going to the Congressmans office, becuase thats all he would do.Now whether he knew any better or not I dont know, but when I contacted him again,he still insisted that my Congressman was the best way to go,which I will not do because of the comments he made earlier.I have also been trying to get in touch with my Senator, but I have yet to hear from him as of this morning, but think I would have heard something by now as its been a couple of months since I contacted his office the first time and every other week since.I may call the office in Winston Slaem and see what hey say,its about a three hour ide from here so its no big deal.thansk!
