I"m looking for something small and inexpensive to do some light work around the house. What is the difference in these tractors?

The 8N is a simple tractor to work on, and (IMHO) the best thing you can get (without spending big bucks), to do brush hogging, discing, plowing, harrowing, and other light duty stuff around the farm. I've got a 1949 8N, I use it on my 101 acre farm for more things then my Farmall 460. Easy on gas, easy to fix, cheap to run, cheap to find - what more do you want? I've also got a loader that comes in handy when I need it.

9N was first. 2N was wartime version. 3 speed, steering by bevel gears so they can kick worse than a mule.

9N production began in 1939, 2N in 1942, 8N in 1948.

8N has 4 speeds forward and a ball work steering gear that doesn't kick near as much as the previous N tractors.

They have a front mount distributor on the front of the camshaft behind the fan. Hard to work on, except the last year of the 8N which has a side mount distributor.

Light work is all they will do.

Look for my posts today about one of my tractors on the N board. There is some good info there.

I had a 9n years ago with a sherman hi-lo gear box. I hated that tractor! WhenI swapped it with a thousand dollars for JD 720D that needed some work I was thrilled and amazed at my good luck. I couldn't have been happier to see that thing go down the road.

Put the cost of the Ford toward the price of a better tractor!

Well, I agree! Money spent on an N series Ford can certainly be better spent on something else, something better equipped, and something newer.

The man did ask what the differences were, though.

True. He also said he was looking for something to use. Check out fords a generation or two after the n's. Better machine not much more money.
