My dad and I run a small hobby farm (10acres), and we are looking for one to 4 row planter that can handle sweet corn, indian corn, squash and a couple different varieties of pumpkins.. So I have a lot of different seed sizes.. So far we have been looking at IH "cyclone" planters. Like the 400, 800, 900, to pull behind my farmall 300. Does anyone have any other suggestions for planters? A fellow mentioned a JD 1240 will work also.. Can anyone give me more information on that kind of planter?

best idea! in reply to 26Red, 04-01-2005 08:29:03
You dont need anything fancy...For a few acres of punkins...what I do it take an old 290 planter...and take the hoppers off...paint a line on the wheel, one revolution equals about 3-4 feet....at every revolution of the wheel while you are waling behind, drop 2 seeds down the chute....by using this method you dont need any plates, you dont need to worry about spacing, just drive what you want....or if you want about 6-7 feet spacing, drop seeds with every other revolution....cheap way to get by with what you have....it dont take long to plant a few acres....or rig up a seat bracket and mount it to the frame of the planter and ride along....

Danny Carroll is a friend of mine and has a pumpkin farm right along where I work. I have added his home page. If you contact him I am sure he can help you. Saturday afternoons are probably best as he is a religious man and protem speaker of the Iowa house of Rep.

A JD plateless planter would do it. I have a friend who plants several acres of pumpkins as well as corn (sweet, field and indian ) with a 1240 and swears by it. For small fields of vine crop planting, I found that marking the field at 90degree angles while sowing fertilizer in one direction then planting by hand made it possible to cross cultivate, which cut out alot of hoeing and still gave fairly good weed control. You plant where your marks cross, if you want 6' sapcing like for pumpkins or squash you do every other mark. HTH

Thanks for the input. Since I want to carry the chain on a John Deere MT, Ford 3600, John Deere 2010, and a Kubota L245 I may use more than one solution.

You do not need anything special for vine crops..You want to plant the rows at least 10 feet apart and 10 feet between hills...careful measure of distance to insure you can cross cultivate is important..unless you plan on doing a lot of hand hoeing...If you understand vine crops you will know they will completely fillin all the space between hills and rows and set roots everywhere.....One person can plant more vine crops than 50 can keep clean or harvest. I would learn well the chemicals that will keep weeds down or import some migrant workers to keep any large area of vine crops clean.....irrigation is also very important on most vine crops...

A Farmall 300 will hot have the power needed for the cyclone. Plus the air planters need TLC to keep them running correctly.

I'd go for simple like a JD 494A or IH 56 plate type planter. Lincon Ag plates still sells all the plates and graded seed can still be had.

For pumpkins and Squash I purchase a plastic laying machnig and waterwheel transplanter and save on the weeding. You can start the pumpkins in flats or direst seed by hand into the hole. I'm going to experiment with clover between the plastic as a natural mulch

You'll use a lot less seed with a transplanter because your eliminate the thinning. Just look at the price of the PM tolerent pumpkin seed

Hi Ed,

I guess I don't know what you mean about the TLC part on the Cyclo. Heck, all ya gotta do is run a grease gun across 'em once a day; ya have to do that with all machinery.

I agree tho, they're a little too big for a 300.

I bought a JD 70 4 row in excellent shape last year for $300. I plan on cutting it down to a 2 row soon. I bought mine out of the wheeler dealer free ad paper. I plan on getting busy with the mod this weekend. BTW the other 2 row units are spoken for. Easy.

We farm about 80 acres of fresh market vegetables and fruits. We use a two row Monosem NG+. It plants everyting for us. A little spendy to start with, but we figure with labor savings and seed savings it paid for itself in 4 years. Planting sweet corn, you could set a ruler with how accurate it is. I would say, plus or minus one half inch. We plant 14 acres of pumpkins, with about 8 different pumpkin varietys. With all the different size pumpkin seed, it does not miss a beat. So I would reccomend a Vacuum planter over an "Air" planter. Some of the other brands of Vacuum planters look good too.

In our area now, sometimes I see an 6 or eight row used unit for cheap. A person could cut it down far cheaper than the price of a new one.

Our planter is set up for 40" rows. We use that for most all our crops. Cucumbers, squash, corn, beans, gourds. Our tractor is set up with 80" wheel spacing. For most crops, we just drive wheel track ontop of wheel track. But for pumpkins, we plant about 5' in row spacing, and try to set the two units up so that they do not drop at the same time. We then drive wheel track outside of wheel track so we end up with a 40" row then about a 70" row. The pumpkins fill in and you can't even tell when they are done.

We sell all the pumpkins out of the pumpkin patch. We haul wagon loads of people out to the field, they pick them, and we haul the people back in. For decoration and to break up the scenery, we also add sunflowers to our pumpkin mix. It is a good photo opertunity for the parent to take a picture of their kid with a pumpkin under a 10' sunflower.

You might want to check out www.marketfarm.com. They have vacuum planters, and if we were to buy a new one today, I think I would go with the Matermacc planter. Just about the same as the Monosem, but maybe a little more user friendly.

Good luck.

If you were looking for new, the price tag on a new unit is a little shocking. You might want to inquire about electric vacuums for these units instead of a pto vacuum pump. Last I knew, you could take about $3000 off the price.

Hi Red,

I'm very partial to the Cyclo planter, but I'm really wondering if a 300 has the snort to tug one.

Dunno,

Allan

Well, I only need to plant one row at at time for the pumpkins...I wouldn't mind narrowing the planter by a few rows..

Howdy,

Not familiar with the IH planters but if they"re older 4 row planters they would be good. Since it"s a hobby farm you probably don"t want to bust out big bucks, right? I use a JD 494A here to plant my corn. That or a 1240 JD would do for you. That or one of the other IH 4 row planters or probably any brand for that matter would work. Getting the right plates is your biggest concern as far as all the switching from crop to crop goes. Also, these planters can be found at a pretty good price. I bought a good 494A for 300.00 last year. Also, at a sale near Columbus, the place was full of 4 and 6 row corn planters so I"m sure price would have been good. Hope this helps. God bless.
