where did the term pony motor come from ? back in the 30's&40's my dad called them starting motors on cat. crawers.

My dad use to called them, piece of s#!t, son of a b!#%h, or you mother f#@!er. I really didn't know they were called "pup motors" until I bought my 730 john deere. I guess everybody's has different nick names for them motor.

In our area on the Canadian prairies we called both Cat and John Deere starting engines "Pups".
Probabaly a regional thing...

Pup engines here. Also donkey engines and cranking engines has been heard.
