I know this topic isn't tractor related, but there is a lot of farm knowledge on this site.

I have ten Bore goats and seven Katahdin sheep that I would like to run together. They are presently in separate fields.

Can you run them together? My big Billy weighs about 300 lbs and can be really rough on other smaller Billy’s. My sheep weigh about 100 to 175 lbs and have a much tamer attitude. I also have three yearlings that will not protect themselves at all.

Do you think that Billy will hurt or kill the sheep? They will be in a field and wooded area of about ten acres. There is one large shed for cover which they will have to share.

I've had my sheep and goats together for years with no problems. I've got Tennessee Fainting Goats and Lincoln sheep. Goats tend to stay together in their own pack as do the sheep - but there's never been any fighting. I've got one big goat buck (not big by African Boer standards though) and he has huge horns - but has never used them. Only run-ins we've had at all are with young sheep rams - when they first get "rammy" they go around trying to knock over anyone and everything. In your case though, I don't know. I've heard Boer bucks can get nasty (other than the smell).

I've run Angora goats with sheep w/o any problem. I must say though that goats are much more trouble than sheep, IMO. Angora goats aren't as bad as Spanish or milking goats but they're more of a problem than Polypay sheep by a long way.

We always did. Cattle and horses and hogs, geese and ducks and whatever we had ran together, too.
Sheep are grazers. Goats are browsers. They don't even eat alike.

Russ,
Yes you can run sheep and goats together. If you feed them the sheep cannot have goat feed, goats need copper to live and it is poison to sheep, builds up in thier liver and poisons them. Goats can eat feed formulated for sheep however. Sheep also cant have a goat mineral block around, same result. Hope this helps, Van

Sheep and goats run well together with the exception of large males of either species.

It goes both ways...a large billy will go after your male sheep or even young female sheep, and a large ram will go after the young goats.

Ok to run the rest together....watch them closely at first but you should be fine.

As the prior poster said, many sheep farmers keep goats (or llamas) in the pasture with sheep because the sheep won't defend themselves.

I used to sell goats to a man to run with his sheep. He claimed that a sheep would not fight off wild dogs, but goats will.
