It's a seasonal thing. Guys that run cows want a calf to adopt out to a cow that has lost hers. They are banking on that calf doubling by fall and they have the cow anyway.

I been wanting an excuse to get out of the cattle business; I'm down to about 80 (from a high of almost 300) head of 'mama' cows in a cow/calf operation. It'll take 2 or 3 weeks to get'em up and get'em paired/matched up and sold. If the market holds, I'm gone; been in the commercial beef cow business since '58, but there'll never be a better time to quit. My newest fences are 40 years old and every acre of pasture needs renovating. I've kept the fences patched, but there comes a point when you have to push'em up and start over..... ..just don't have the energy/inclination to keep on.

What kind of calves were these?
Holstein Bulls????? ?????

I can remember clunking them in the head when they hit the ground because it cost more to sell them than they were worth.

I guess it is just a local mind set on my part because no one around here sells bottle beef calves. Just as soon let them get weaned before you sell them because you do not need the milk any way.

I know Holstein bulls are up but I do not think it is that hard. Price follows demand. Probably high right now but is always lower in the fall calving season.

I can remember a neighbor that had 2 Holstein bottle bulls for sale a couple of years ago. He loaded them in the trailer and took them to the sale yard. Since the price was down he parked the trailer next to the drive way into the sale yard and put a sign on the trailer that said FREE CALVES!!!!!
When he came back to get his trailer he had 10 calves in the trailer.
