Went to an auction at Red Deer Alberta on Thursday, sure wished I had listed some items. One bidder went 190.00 each Canadian for some 40.00 to 50.00 implament jacks. There were three 12,000 pound jacks that he didn't want and some one else took them for 190.00, I can buy the for 145.00. Bolt bins went for 750.00 including bolts. Millar 250 welder went 1700.00 and a Lincolin Ideal arc went for 1750.00. To top it off there was a 10% surcharge on top of the price. There weren't many bargins there.

Ther must be good deals at some auctions, but any I went to I was amazed at what things went for and what guys would pay just to outbid some other guy.Always came out empty handed shaking my head.

Years ago I was at a small town auction of the Chevrolet/Allis Chalmers dealer. Auction prices in the am were fair to good, but no one was on hand to serve lunch for the all day auction. They stopped the auction at noon for 1 hr to allow the bidders time to go uptown for lunch. A good number of them spent that hour at the local bars eating a microwave heated sandwich which they washed down with plenty liquid refreshment. The afternoon bidding was spirited with a few of the bidders laughing, giggling and acting strange while bidding on things they had a hard time focusing their eyes on. Many well worn shop items were bringing from 100-300% of new price. The old owner who looked serious and a little sad in the am,was grining from ear to ear in the pm portion of his sale. He had a good sale :)

so, what you are saying is... an auctioneer should seriously consider bringing a supply of Moosehead barely sandwiches 2-4 or 2... to an auction to loosen up the waving hand... ha ha, not abad idea!

I've always told my wife that if anything happened to me to have a "free" keg at the auction. All it takes is one or two items to "go stupid" to pay off the keg.

When the bonanza farms went broke after the crash of 1919, the bankers used to hire moonshiners to stash jugs of booze around the yard so they could get a bid or two on the items being sold. Otherwise, the financial situation was so bad that nobody would even bid a penny without some liquid encouragement. My Dad never drank, so he never got caught up in that; he just laughed at his neighbors that did.
