Depends on the type of mud.

If it's the slimy stuff that lays on top of hard clay and the like, you want to dig down and into the hard stuff for traction, so chains do well there.

If it's the soupy stuff that you sink deeply into, trying to float on top helps. That said, it's often times paddle wheel tread that keeps you moving.

I of course have both types on my place, so no matter what, I get stuck one place or another! LOL

Those words bring back memories. I worked for a brick layer and had to keep him supplied with bricks and mortar. That included mixing the motar. All day long all I heard was "Mud, more mud, mud, more mud". Seems like all I was doing was mixing and running. It paid 75¢ an hour.

Hi----- --I am in Western, Pa. and it is a muddy mess here also. I usually run thru the side yard, but the ruts are to bad. The water never drains away or dries out. I guess it is global warming. You know, the air becomes saturated from the ice packs melting.

Hey JED where in W. Pa. are you. I'm about 30 miles nw of Pittsburgh, Beaver Co. Muddy here too and no sun just clouds, cold, and rain.

What part you from, I am also in Northern IN and it is fine here in most places. Duals will help the most if you have to be in it at all.

I hope I don't get disproved by those with many more years of experience!

But I've always been taught, and few times I've had to do it that seems right, you want to float on mud. Duals would keep you from getting bogged down...as quickly :D

Chains will keep digging. If it's only a little bit on the surface and you can dig to firm ground, fine. Otherwise, chains will just dig a hole to China. (We're you could then buy a low priced all wheel drive tractor...)
