Grandpa"s 1965 JD 1020 (deisel) was passed to me and I am having a bit of a problem. I am losing large quantities hydraulic but cannot find a leak. Also, the engine oil level steadily rises. At first I thought I was getting deisel into the engine causing the oil level to rise but now I"m wondering if there is someway hydraulic could be getting into the engine compartment. It has a dry clutch (I think). Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks

The older 1020s (AG) and 300s (Industrial) have open center hydraulic power steering powered by a gear pump mounting on the front of the engine. When the shaft leaks, the hyraulic oil gets into the engine crankase. After serial # 45,200 the tractors use closed-center hydraulics for the power steering and get the pressure from the main pump (no separted power steering pump used).
