OT: How To Get Overspray Off?

This winter I've been painting various tractor parts in the driveway using cans of spray paint. Some of the overspray drifted onto a nearby car. It's not noticeable to the eye, but the car now has a sandpaper-like finish, particularly on the hood, roof, and trunk. Yesterday I tried rubbing some Pre-Kleano onto a fender and after exerting some elbow grease, was able to get the overspray off, leaving the car's finish smooth again. I probably need to go over the entire car this way. My question is, while the Pre-Kleano works, is there a better product or method for removing overspray without damaging the good paint underneath? I found that brake fluid works the best for removing overspray from windows, but it can't be used on painted surfaces as it will eat the paint.

A clay bar is the best. But, once I got some overspray on my 2003 Ford Cobra and the advice I got from a paint guy was to get a cotton rag, put some mineral spirits on the rag, then wipe the surface down until the overspray is off. You will need to re-wax your car, but this trick worked real well for me and required very little elbow grease. I was really surprised at how easily it came off.

Try it in a small area first - just to make sure...

Good luck,
Dan

Get a clay bar cleaner kit. You will be shocked at how much stuff it takes off.

Seen a lot of tires painted. Only takes a couple minutes to protect them.

I've used a litle "Goop" handcleaner on overspray. Then carwash.

Guys, you gotta watch what you rub on a clear coat paint job, or thats what the paint shop told me after I waxed my red Chevy truck. I now have a flat red paint job, it took about a month for the paint to turn flat after I waxed it. Sad part was, it didn't need waxing when I did it, I just needed something to do.

I wax my clear coat paint twice a year.
Never got any "Flat" spots.

Red, I don't remember what I used on the truck, the truck is an 82 GMC, and this happened years ago when it was 3-4 years old. I did show the body man what I waxed it with, he said I shouldn't have used it, he would have said the same thing if I had told him that I washed it with plain water. I always thought GM didn't put enough clear coat on it. I still have the truck, thinking about another red clear coat paint job on the old sucker.

Hi Dave,

Get a bottle of spray-on road tar remover from your local supplier.

By the time you can walk around that car with the spray bottle, the overspray will be laying on the ground. Rinse with a garden hose.

I've done the same thing, the first thing you do is take it to the car wash, you'll be surprised at how much of the overspray comes off. Next, just a good wax, applied by hand and rubbed off by hand.
