I went to check out some tractors at an auction that will be tom. I saw a few that interested me. There was a deere, 2955, with cab, air etc. Is this a good tractor, how much will it bring, with paint in good shape and good tires? The second, a farmall 560 rowcrop w/narrow front. It was a gasser. Same questions for this tractor as the deere, execpt the paint was in poor condition. Third tractor was what I thought was a 1066, maybe a 1086, couldn't read the tag very well. This tractor has poor paint, forgot about the tires, but from what I remembered, they all would hold air. The injection pump looks as though it is rebuilt, it is freshly painted. Same questions. Fourth tractor I was was an Allis 7045. It had a cab, but what looked to be the compressor (on the left side of the engine) did not have a belt on it, and it had one hose running out, is this the compressor? The cab needs some work, the tin is a little dented up, rear tires match (singles, not duals) but are a little weathered, frong are mismatched and weathered, needing replacement. It is a powershift trans. same questions once again. What should I look for in the way of trouble? How hard would it be to get parts for each tractor? What else should I look for that would be in around 5k range? Which would make this range? what would be some models to jump on? Which ones would be best for baling, mowing (20 ft batwing), and other farm work? The 560 didn't have 3pt or fasthitch. The others all had 3 pt. thanks for your help.

Just a guess but if that JD 2955 is in real good shape it may bring as much as or more than all the other three combined.

I have found that at the auctions I go to, the Deere's fetch over $20000 Cad. Quite popular. I don't often see many IH's except the old C's and collector stuff. Generally, big old 2 wheel drive power like the 1066, and 1086 are under 10. Doesn't seem to matter what make, other than Deere. From what I have seen, the Allis will be quite affordable for you. Prices on the old Allis' seem to vary in my area. Those prices are for generally good working, complete, older tractors, cosmetics aside. My view of general public consignment auctions is one of caution. It's like buying a pig in a bag. You never know for sure what you're gonna get, until you get it home. Some auctions now won't let you try anything to determine it's problems or value, and make no claim of it's status, so you're often on your own. Personally, I'm always suspicious of a newly painted tractor at an auction, as you don't know what that's intended to cover up. Check the stuff over as best you can, and don't get carried away with your hand. Happy hunting.

I'd say none of the above are going to go for around $5,000. You might watch that 7045 Allis, that would be the cheapest tractor you have in that list, but you probably aren't going to get it for less than $7,500 since powershift is more desireable. Parts are not an issue with any of those tractors and are good machines.

The JD is out of your price range. the 560 gasser you can buy all day long for $2000 or less. Allis should be in your budget as well as the 10 but might be a heavier tractor than you need and might get into a lot of pricy repairs if it is not in good shape. I'd watch for a 656 diesel. You can pick them up for less than $5000 and they will have 3 point hitch. And I guess next to the venerable M they are one of the best tractors IH ever produced. Way more tractor than a 3020 Deere for less money.

Oh yeah I forgot about that 560, yes that should be well under his price range, but underpowered for his 20ft mower. The others are all on the big side except the JD 2955, but those are worth alot more than $5,000
