what i run in my pickups and semi is amsoil 1540 fully synthetic. run the pickups 20,000 miles and filters at 10,000. i always run and they get up to operationg temperature. the way i figure it oil is cheap insurance. i run a good filter k and n oil filters. the way conventional oil is and as many quarts is a diesel takes not worth changing often (as the quantity) and the way crude conventional oils the prices of that is going fully synthetic isnt too bad. i do like cummins valvoline blue is a great motor but finding it around here anymore is very vrey hard (read that it cant be found around here) so i switched to amsoil. if your planning on the truck a long time and you spent that much money on it dont skimp on oil. i figure too if i run synthetic it is a much better oil they can minipulate it however they want and need also aint supporting the arabs

I have nothing but Rotella in my PSD's for many years. Yes, even the new 6L with oil operated injectors. YMMV due to altitude and climate but here in the south it works just fine.

As far a what oil to use in a Duramax I was told rice oil, or isuzki oil. I just had to say that.

Whatever brand you use do it regularly. Take care of that motor and it will take care of you. I have an '02 Duramax 2500HD with 254,000 miles. Not a bit of problem.

Hi Mark,

It really don't mattter what brand as long as it's rated CI, for diesel use and the viscosity for your climante.

I personally think 15w40 is too heavy for most cooler climantes and 10w30 would work better as I'm thinking some are loosing some fuel mileage on 15w40. Most engine mfg are shipping new units with 10w30. I switching to 10w30 this next oil change to prove/disprove my point as I track fuel mileage close.

Me, I like using a oil that's has a good track record in the heavy OTR diesel industry and choose Delo. Easy to get at any truckstop and most auto parts house anywhere in the USA for a reasonable cost, about $6.25gal.

Rotella also has a good name in OTR diesels. However there's some that are finding a oil foam problems with the PSD engines using Rotella. Nothing is proven yet, so it may well be another problem or not a problem at all.

Navistar sells an anti foaming additive that is recommendeed for use in all their engines.

Hi T-Bone, on subject of Rotella & PSD... a few years back, a friend had a skipping problem on his Ford PSD. He Took it to the dealer, & they changed oil & used a Ford-Labeled oil. They said the the Rotella was foaming & causing problems with the hydraulic-actuated injectors. He said it solved the problem..... I have always used Rotella in both my Dodge/Cummins trucks, but the oldest one (92) only has 150 k miles. I think the true test of an oil is trucks with 500,000 or more miles.

Many of the heavy truck engines use HELO injection system, primarily Caterpillar engines. There is a sliding scale used to determine proper oil change interval. The more miles on the engine, the shorter the interval.

Because of this, we have seen many Cats that came in running like crap and have a check engine light on. The service code would be "Injection Actuation Pressure low". The first step is always find last oil change, do the math according to engine mileage and see if it"s over due. 50% of these issues are solved with fresh oil and filter.

The HELO injection system uses engine oil to hydraulically operate the injectors. It does this by ramping pressure up to around 2200-2500 psi in the actuation oil circuit. Naturally, this beats the oil to death. That is why oil that is old, contaminated fuel or water, or of the wrong grade will cause the engine to run like crap.

Note: although actuation pressures reach 2500 psi, lube pressure to the internally lubricated engine parts is normal.

That"s what I"ve learned so far about HELO systems.

Chris.

I had heard that Hydraulic injectors in the PSD were under a license from Cat.....

Hi Davis,

A couple years ago over on the thedieselstop.com there was several discussions on foaming and Rotella. Those discussions never did prove any positive results but did leave a guy wondering "if" there could be one.

I read in the Ford CD manual that a ruff idle or surging complaint, the mechanic was advised to add 2qts of oil above the full mark and see if the symptons disappeared. This was Fords diagnoses of oil foaming.

If this curred the symptoms, a oil change and brand change was recomended.

I like the CaseIH 15-40. It seems to be a better oil than the Shell. I use it in my '04 Duramax. Also everything from a Honda 300 to a John Deere G

Believe it or not, rotella t 15w40 is about the cheapest QUALITY!!!! oil you can buy. But notice everyone knows it by name. Mobil is better, but one of the best QUALITY!!! diesel oil is made by Phillips and when you buy it in a 55 gallon drum it is only a few pennies per gallon more.

I'm going to use Mobil 1300 15W-40. Don't know how it's going to like it. I use the Mobil in my 6.5 diesel also; it's done good so far in 43,000 miles.
