For something as small as 20 acres, you might consider a wheel line (sometimes known as a side roll). They're pretty simple, sell for $2500-4500 used (Pacific NW) for a quarter mile with mover and self levelers, but you'll need a minimum of a 5 inch mainline with valves to hook it up($1.50 a foot). Heck I have a 40 and a 20 and I do the 20 with handlines and have a wheeline on the 40. The twenty has an odd shape and an old pond that keeps me from putting a wheel line on it or I would have. But I'm getting a bit long in the tooth to be movin' pipe so I just might buy a few movers and make some short lines.

Dave; Have you looked into use of a reel.I don,t know what your water situation is so may be not feasable. However I have one and used it on 50 acres of Tifton 85.It worked great until some wag set off dynamite charges prospecting for oil on property close to my well and destroyed the screen at the bottom of the casing. It is a 20 inch casing 1000 ft deep.I could not justify a repair. However my reel has 1108 feet of 3" pipe with oscilating water cannon and water powered turbine fitted to reel in the cannon and hose.It covers a swath 245 feet in width using 145 gpm. There are units half the size of mine now available moderately priced.I purchased a used skid mounted 300 gpm 200 psi pump unit w/a four cylinder IH power unit like new for $ 800.oo and it was really a wonder to see in action. I operated it at 125 psi.I had hay when no one else had any during four dry years. If you have a great well or a reservoir you can get by with a lot less consumption than I used with a smaller unit.Used aluminum irrigation pipe is real cheap here in Texas, about 50 to 75 cents per foot.I found out after buying 1000 feet of four inch at $4.40 per foot.Later I found and used 2.5 inch fire hose for more footage between the water source and the reel and it was fine.If this is of interest and I can give you any suggestions or other info.Call me at 830 997 8296 Regards,John Cooney

Hi Dave,

I've never heard of anyone puttin' up a pivot for just 20 acres, but I guess it could be done; just doesn't really seem economic or something? However, they can be configured in all sorts of different ways.

Anyway, you don't want a used one; they wear out. Not only the alignment switches, the gear drives, the tires and the motors, but the pipe itself. All that sand cuts thru the bottom of 'em like a knife. That's why they only have a life expectancy of around 15 to 20 years. If you see one that has been traded in, there was probably a pretty darned good reason for it.

A full 7-tower system runs in at roughly $52K. No pad, no underground feed and no underground electricity.

Also, your well has to be equipped with pressure bowls instead of open discharge. There's another $14K.

Tryin' to help,

Allan

Thanks Allen, the farmer that rents all my land has a pivot on it now. The well is also on my land and he supplies 2 other property owners rental lands with water from the well on my land. I wanted to Either get in my own system and get a better price for rent or put in hay ground and not worry bout dry years. There is really money to be made round this area horse hobbys paying $3-$4/small bales.. I currently recieve $35 /acre rent. I want more $acre some how. Have bout 30 tillable in ? right now. Tower comp stopped in today to see if i were interested in a 20 year or so contract for $500+/month rent for a 100'*100' spot for a cell tower. Good cash but I have worries so I at least want to net enough off land to pay taxes and some of the ins. By the way local dealer just had a 966 with 1700 hours on it. Went back and it was gone. Sold in 24 hours. Cozy cab, good tires. orig paint and CLEAN. $8900

Dave,

Boy, I think I'd wanna do something different too; I see where you're coming from now.

Don't know anything about your situation, the layout/quality of your land, it's production, or your business arrangement, but that sure smells like a kettle of dead fish to me.

Let's just say for a minute that your land is in alfalfa. In your area, and for the sake of arguement we'll figure on the low side, your ground ought to be very easily producing 3 ton an acre. At $70 a ton, this guy owes you $105 per acre for your share of the crop alone.

Then in addition, he's using your well and your water to irrigate his two rental farms on top of that?

Is there more to this story or am I missing something here? He's giving you 1/6 of the crop, wearing out your pump and mining your water?

Is he at least paying for the electricity on the well?

Allan

I'd be curious how far north in MN this is, if 3 alfalfa cuttings are possible 'there'. We can get 4, or at least 3 good ones down in this part of the state, but above St. Cloud it gets cold fast, lot of just grass hay up there, single cutting even. Of course, he is getting double the money for hay that we get down here.

This site shows hay prices I am more used to, in the same state:
