I broke a pivot bracket on my grapple. What oddities should I be concerned with when welding cast?

I was told to heat it, then use Nickel Rod and let cool very slowly. Any other info would be appreciated.

Dug,

Are you talking about the outer block piece?

Hey Allan,

The bracket (total of three) bolts to the frame and allows the grapple to pivot. I attached a pic. The break is along the front, just below the grease zerk.

Hey Bud,

I wouldn't fool with welding the thing; I just bought one last week (the front cap).

The thing only cost $12; brand spankin' new.

This is just my opinion, tho. Sure not tryin' to tell ya what to do.

Allan,

I just spent the last week looking for one, all the farm stores and dealers just looked at me like I had a third eye. Nobody sells Farmhand around here. Could you give me a phone number of the place you bought yours? Sure would appreciate it.

No need welding cast especially if you put stress or pressure on it. Does not matter if you use nichol or steel rods hot or cold,it will seperate again unless you just let it lay on the table and look at it. Take Allen's advice and get the new part.

Sorry dude, but that"s crap.
Here we go again with the welding cast iron thing. Of COURSE cast can be welded! If it CANNOT be I wish someone would kindly TELL us so we"d stop DOING it as we have since 1942! IF you DO wind up getting it welded ALWAYS reinforce whenever possible....NOT because of the weld but because is wasn"t strong enough to begin with.

Since 1942? No wonder you're so grumpy, anyone welding that long has got a built in excuse. Most of us on the forum here usually try to respond in a more civilized fashion Craig.

Gee Wizz fellers, If we were living back when the Dude Disease was ramped, weed be pulling out our six-gun's and go'en at it, and of course Boot Hill would be busy again, you fellers are sure some'en ..... now from what I know, welling Cast is a very big problem, and most all times, it just brakes again, so don't be cheap and get a new one, your always better off in the long run.

Cool it you two before the madam gets out the skillet. The welding of castings that are to be loaded
or stressed, by arc welding is a bad idea as
the internal stress created by the weld material
cooling are nearly impossible to relieve. Even
if you preheat the work ,when it cools the two
different materials contract at different rates
making the repair weak. If you repair the break using oxy/acet and cast
iron rods , the weld material and the base material
are the same and therefore contract at the same
rate. link below will get you to my web site and in
the site is a link to many more pictures of cast
iron repair.

Just can't help myself, but would that skillet be a cast iron one? Worse yet, a cast iron skillet with a crack in it. Sorry, like I said, I just can't help it.

Mike, Yup it's probably cast and if it wasn't cracked it most likely will be after thumping
a couple of hard heads .
