not looking for a color war but...

Have an auction coming up, looking for a size upgrade (have a MF 165 and a 265), and there are quite a few tractors in my size range (looking for 85-100 HP) on the auction block. I don't know too much about other brands, so i figured y'all could give me some advice.
The models that I am looking at are;
IH 1066 w/ 4wd 1066 w/o 4wd 966 986 806
Ford 7000
Oliver 1750 1850
MM G705

I think these are just the size I am looking for, some a little bigger, some a little smaller, either way it would be an upgrade over the MF265 (which is a great tractor, don't get me wrong, has serviced our farm for 30 years). The new tractor would probably be used to operate haybine and baler, and not too much more. Located in upstate new york, not the flattest, or greatest of soil, but it serves me well.
So anyway, to continue making a short question even longer, how do these models stack up (in terms of actual use)? Should I favor one over another (besides the obvious brand war...i mean; are any of these tractors one to avoid, is any one of them a particularly weak worker, or does one have a history of breaking down etc...)
I do understand that they are all 25-35 years old, and aren't going to work the way they would out of the showroom, but we wouldn't be pushing them too hard, just a hobby farm (if any farm could be a hobby farm) that puts away 4-5000 small squares a year, but will be doubling that eventually.
thanks alot guys,
sorry for the length of this.

by the way...does anyone else get as excited at i do for auction day? I can't wait.
if anyone is in the area, it is at MacFadden & Sons in sharnon springs, NY. here is the website;

My self if it's a diesel I would nail the 806 I have used one for hay work and it was a all around decent tractor and it rode pretty good and was good on fuel. But with fuel prices to day I would look for a 1070 case I could mow rake and bale with one of these on a tank of fuel a week they worked great.

Well i haven't had alot of experience with any of those models but I would say either the farmall 966 or 986 or the Ford. hehe and I really like Olivers too but, parts availability is going ot get worse as the years go on for them as well as the Molines. I am in a Oliver 1800 now and there are some simple things that the dealers say are discontinued. Of course the 50 series is newer and might be better but it is not going have the support of either the Ford or IH in my opinion.

The 1066 is a heck of a tractor, probably alot more power and fuel consumption that you will ever need. If these models are like most of the newer ones the Ford will give you better economy and still have enough power to do what you want without keeping it in a strain all the time. It will have good parts support if there is a dealer nearby as will the IH's.

If you look at the Olivers the over/under shift is nice as long as it os in good working condition. If it is bad and you want it then it ia like the IH Ta, expensive to fix and just something else to go wrong. This last 1800 I bought doesn't have it and I am glad. Haha one less headache to repair:)

I will agree with the man who suggested a AC 180-190. Good reliable tractors and usually reasonably priced with good parts availability as well. I Don't know alot about the MF's so I won't say

I think everybody has done a good job keeping their color preferences to a minimum not like them combine boys if that same question gets asked. However you may want to make sure whatever you buy it has some sort of dealer support close by because all them machines you mentioned can get pricey to either work on or have worked on. Just remember horsepower is just like a Corvette if you want to play you're going to pay. All them machines you mentioned are getting old an you better make sure how they've been handled just like a horse.

I have to agree that there are other tractors that would be better for what you want to do. The IH's are real workhorses but not real nimble. 1750 Oliver might be OK but I would look for something else.

Steve,

I would consider the Oliver 1850. Of course it would depend on how good condition it is, but if its in good condition buy it!

It has a 354 Perkins engine which is troublr free, a bullet proof tranny/diff, and a nice power to wight ratio.

Make sure if you get it that it has an over- under hydra shift, so you can get up to 18 gears.

Just my opinion, but I don't think you'll be sorry.

God bless,

Pawel

Of the ones you"ve mentioned, I only have extensive experience on 1066s; not wanting to start a color war either, but for baling, there are more user-friendly tractors out there from that era than any of those you"ve listed, unless it"s the 7000..... .my opinion only.

a 1066 is 130hp. The aftermarket 4wds are a real poor design on the 66 series. I work for a guy who has a 1466 4wd and that thing takes a huge space to turn around in, but otherwise ok. Another pretty decent tractor for the money is the Allis Chalmers 190-200-210-220 tractors, and the 7000 series as well. There are alotta brands and models that would fit your criteria.

Since you already run Massey's, I'd go with a Massey 1130 or 1135. They're as bullit proof as anything ever built. Do you do business with Mabie Brothers?

For me, from this list, I'd go with the 986.

Steve,

Don't want any part of a war either, but for an 80-100 horse tractor, you can't get much better than a 966.

follow up question for allan in NE in reply to Allan in NE, 03-12-2005 06:28:56
why the 966 over the 986...seems to me the newer would be better...(if only this were actually true)...is the 86 problematic...or just a personal preference...

Hi Steve,

Yes Sir, I would imagine that the 986s are just fine also.

I've just never been around one and didn't want to comment on them, without knowing.

Allan

Think newer rather than older. 4WD IH's you list won't have the turning radius you need for haymaking, and parts for the Elwood/Coleman axles are expensive and hard to find. There is a fair amount of Oliver expertise in Central NY, but parts availability on Olivers and particularly Molines isn't going to get any better as time goes on. if I were you, I would look at the 7000, 2WD 1066, 986, or 966. The Ford won't have great visibility or hydraulic flow, but probably will be the lowest cost, and depending on condition could easily be the best value. Shifting linkages on 66 and especially 86 series IH's can be problematic, check out any tractor before sale day.

I think for you a 190 XLT AC would work just fine, have put a lot of hours on these tractors and never had a prolem. and I think they are rather nice to drive. Tim
