A buddy says that some ford rangers came with 5.0's from the factory around the mid 90's or so. I dont beleive it nor have I seen one that was factory. Can anyone verify this?

FarmerDave is correct, 4.0 is as big as they get. And they are well manufactured vehicles. 1998 Ranger, 153,000 miles and not a lick of trouble.

I got a 92 XLT with a 4.0. When I go to wally's to buy windshield wipers 4.0 is as big as they came. Mine is loosing compression (163K miles) but when it was newer it really had some pickup.

I bought it used in 94 with 40K miles. IMO, it's been a good truck except carbon forms in the engine. I have run it on premium and pour this techron ($6 ) stuff in it every few tanks to keep it from pinging.

Transmission is starting to slip. I might get rebuilt motor when it goes.

Ford Offered a 5.0 V8 in the Explorer about 5-7 years ago. But your buddy is not correct about a V8 being in a Ranger. The engine sizes in the rangers have been 2.3, 3.0, 4.0..... one 4 cylinder and 2 V-6's.

And..... before there was a 3.0 V-6, there was the venerable 2.9 V-6.

Umm, you missed one. There was a 2.0 litre 4 banger in the early-mid eighties Rangers. Not sure when they dropped them from the lineup, but, they had them for sure from 1984-1986, maybe earlier and later, I don't know.
