Hello, I am still trying to make up my mind on a tractor. The other day I ran across a D17 series 4 diesel on Ebay. After 2 days, no bids. It is at $2600 opening bid. The tractor runs great and has 3pt and alternator. I am in central Kentucky, and was wandering if it would be a bad idea to ship it from Louisiana. Just wanted some input on how much it would cost me. Also, the guy says he will sell the manuals with the tractor at 3000, should I go on and bid that if I do decide to get it or wait until he sells them seperately. I know these tractors are good tractors, since we had one until about 3 years ago, and I wanted to get another one. Basically, is this a wise investment in yourall's opinions? This model is my #1 choice for a project tractor, so I figured I could fix it up real nice. Also, are the series 4 supposed to have lights, this one doesn't. Just curious, wont change my opinion on the tractor since I don't use lights when baling in the middle of the day:). Thanks in advance for your input. Also, was 3rd gear a problem on this model, our old one like this never had a problem. The link below is a bid to the tractor. would this be a good tractor from what you see for me, a 15 yearold to work on and use. this model was the first tractor that i ever drove, so I really want one. Also, if anyone has one near central Ky, let me know also. Thanks

I would not buy this tractor without starting it cold, warming it up, and running it through all gears, and generally inspecting it in person. The air intake problem he describes is a real problem or one waiting to happen - - don't like leaks in intake air - - can quikly eat the engine. Don't like the cutting of sheet metal for the altermator conversion. I think you can probably find better.

Thanks for youall's opinions. I was wondering about the intake. I can't find another one for a diesel, so I guess they are hard to come by. I couldin't tell how they cut the sheet metal. Do you think I will have much of a problem finding one in Central Ky? I would really like to find our old D17, what do you think the chances would be? Thanks for all your help once again.

Well I am going to be the Negative on this one. Stay away from Allis Diesels. Had one , Bad move. will Nickel, Dime you to Death especially one with questions ,like ,Why doesn't it have Lights? La. Tractors mostly have been worked to Death. Ask what it was used for before making a decision. If it was used in Rice,"Red Flag"

If the condition is as he says, it's sure worth the money. The D-17 is considered by many AC fans to be the best of the D series, and the IV is the one everyone wants, with the better cooling system, hydraulics, and husky 3 point setup. I wouldn't bid $3,000 just to get the manuals- they're available through AGCO, and I think you could get all three for under $100. I'd take a run at it, if I were you. You should be able to find someone to haul it at a reasonable price, from Louisiana to Kentucky.

Hurst,

It looks like a Series IV but I would still get the serial number. Ask him any questions you have (like the 3rd gear) that are not answered in the description. Or ask him to try making the tranny jump out of gear. The seller seems like he's shooting straight on the description and if I didn't already have other project tractors I would be bidding on this one. BTW, the diesels are not known for their good cold weather starting--I would ask him about his valve lash question--does he think the valves are set too tight or too loose? Are they making a bunch of noise or what??

Series IV had lights on the fenders. Might need some work, but with that heavy 3-pt, etc likely an interesting workhorse.
