Hey, I am in need of a PTO Sprayer that I could run behind my Farmall H to water remote location trees and plants. Any ideas out there?

Just look for a complete trailer type field sprayer and all you will have to do is a little pluming change for the filling from the pond

Get your self a 330 gallon plastic cube...they sell them here in Ohio for $100...it has a 2" valve on the bottom...you could run a 2" pipe out hte side with a hose on the bottom of hte pipe so it could flex if needed....then you dont need a pump to empty it, jsut fill it...you would not have to worry about your dirty pond water since it is gravity flow...a 2" electric valve would allow huge water flow.

here one i built, actually for sprayin my pasture, but could be turned into what you were talking about..don"t know about fillin from the pond though, tank came from ag store, about $125 I think,125 gallon.. Pto pump was around $170 or so..built the trailer from part of an old boat trailer frame and the ends of a rear axle of a front wheel drive car welded onto a heavy wall piece of tubing..

How are you going to haul the water? Tank on a trailer of some kind?

Do you need the pump to fill the tank, or will it be filled from a hose/pump somewhere else?

If you don't need the PTO pump to fill the tank, you really don't need, or want, a pump to water trees. Just use a 1" or so diameter piece of flexible hose from the tank, and let gravity do the watering. Hang the end of the hose higher than the water level in the tank, and you wouldn't even need a shut-off valve.

If you are bent on getting a PTO pump, Agri Supply sells a Ferroni for about $130. If I needed one, I think I'd lean in that direction.

Also, use caution if you are drawing water from a river/pond - the "gunk" from the bottom is hard on some of these pumps. At minimum, use some sort of a filter screen, and also raise the intake off the bottom somehow.

I need the pump to suck water from the pond. I could run it in with the freshwater shallow well pump we have for the old building. I want to be able to dispense it from the seat of the tractor with pressure as I drive by the trees. Pressure will speed this action up. What kind of a tank can I mount on the hitch? Do I need to worry about not having an automatic shut-off valve? Can I blow the freshwater pumps up?

Thanks for the information!!!!!

I think that is a difficult way to transfer a rather small amount of water.

As the previous message said, a trailer with gravity folw out for watering would do you more good. Not to be negative, but consider what you wish to accomplish. A spray of high-pressure water will evaporate a lot & bypass a lot, not water the tree roots. You want slow steady flow to the root area. An H did not come with 3pt, will be difficult to hang a tank on the drawbar, and even if you have a 3pt conversion you are looking at 1000 lbs or so max - 100 gallons. That doesn't water very many trees.

Look for a pump that can handle suction out of a pond. They need to handle a bit of trash.

Just my opinion. :)

I don't think you'll be able to mount a very big tank directly on the hitch, as it will be in the way of the PTO. I think a small two-wheeled trailer would be the ticket. You should be able to mount the pump itself somewhere on the hitch. Then, pump into the tank on the trailer. Remember that water weighs over 8# per gallon, so the weight will add up quickly.

Since you want to use the pump to both fill and empty the tank, you will need to do some fancy plumbing. Some sort of three-way valve on the suction side of the pump would be needed. When filling the tank, have the valve turned so you'd be drawing from the hose that goes to the pond, and the discharge hose from the pump going back into the top of the tank. When spraying water, turn that three way valve so it's drawing from the tank. Note: make sure you don't have any air leaks on the suction side of the pump. This will cause major headaches.

You shouldn't need an auto shutoff switch. Perhaps a pressure relief bypass valve. When the pressure becomes too great, this valve will open, causing water to go back into the tank (assuming you have a line running back into the tank?)

A really cheap way to do this is to run a 1/4" line from the output side of the pump, back to the input side, using T fittings. That way, if the output flow is stopped, there will still always be some water flowing through the pump. Note, this line will also need a shut off valve of some kind, or you may run into priming problems.

Clear as mud??? Maybe you could take a close look at someone's spray rig, or the local fire department's grass rig? Also, try an internet search on "fire skid unit", this should provide some info on how the plumbing would need to be done.
