After work today, I went to start my skid steer, & battery was dead flat (2 batteries), not even enough to light the idiot lights or make the hour meter click. I hooked a charger to it, turned it on & needle on charger started bouncing up & down rapidly. To check charger , I hooked it to another battery & it acted OK. Do you think one of the batteries has an internal short??? BTW, charger is a solid state Craftsman, It has always worked well for me. It got dark before I could look any further. Thanks, Davis

We have one fully automatic charger that will not turn itself on if a battery is really dead, like yours, when they won't even turn the lights on. If a battery is stone dead I have to use another charger to get it started and the finish it with the automatic. I would seperate them and charge them seperately and test them.

Thanks for advice, I will unhook them & check them one at a time. Probably time to replace both of them. There is a place here that sells surplus batteries at a good price, I just put an AC Delco in the Massey. $25.00 with a one year warranty.

Is there any protection from overcharge in your charger ? I believe the current drain is too high and an automatic breaker cut the circuit and put it on back cycling continuously. Perhaps you hook the charger with the wrong polarity on your skig steer. Check the polarity, if okay, charge one battery at a time as suggested in another post.

A bad battery, or the cable between them is not grounding right.

I almost bought a new battery, mine had the same symptoms and all it was a rusted ground nut.
So I'm sure you checked the obvious?
Ground cable - Cleaned Posts - acid level.

Try hooking the charger to each battery individually.Yes,it sounds like one battery has a dead short.

I agree with msb, you have a short in one of the batteries. My dad had a Western Auto for 30 years and I saw lots of this. Charge them one at a time until you find the bad one...
