Just looking for your best saying as to how windy can it get where you live? I was on the cell the other day with a fellow from eastern states asking my mailing address, as we spoke the wind came up as usual a typical blasting southern Alberta clipper, and I made a comment that I may have to call back with a change of address as the wind here is known to blow people into Saskatchewan to repopulate the province, hold calves against the grainery until they starve to death... and he replied with a chuckle saying he heard tell of winds out west here where they are gauged with a logging chain bolted to a power pole and when the chain is straight out horizontal it tells you it is windy but when the end links start to blow off you know it is really windy. I never heard that one before and got a chuckle out of it. I said true, I have a wind gauge which is a rock tied by rope on a stick with chart on it starting with "when rock is wet... it is raining. It is labeled an "Official USA Weather Rock". The rest of the chart is to faded to read, does anyone else have one that can be read? I would like to know what the other measures are. Also, I got in mind that others may have similiar tales... what is yours? Would be fun to read... It is so windy that...

I have heard that the reason it is so windy in
Wyoming is that Nebraska sucks. Sorry Alan et al. PS I live in Colorado just South of the Cheyenne wind farm. Those things never stop. Ed

Typical Southern Alberta day. Few years back blew like this for 3 weeks. A fellow, on his way to Vancover stopped and said "Some weather you are having". "Yup, never seen it like this before", replied. 3 weeks later on return east to Ontario, he stopped again, wind blowing, said "Some weather you are having". "Yup, never seen it like this before". He said "I was here 3 weeks ago and that is exactly the same thing you said then". "Yup, same storm".

When my great-great grandparents came to the US they purchased land in Illinois right on the shore of lake Michigan. It was so terribly windy there that they couldn't stand it and they moved north to Wisconsin. The land they owned in Illinois is now the site of the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. It looks like no one else could live there either unless under direct order.

About 50 years ago, we were shingling our big hip roof barn. My Dad, me and a friend of mine. Pretty steep pitch on that roof, and the wind came up sudden and it is blowing to beat all h*ll. My Dad was never one to panic, and said, "Just hunker down close to the roof, you'll be alright." My friend looked white as a sheet and said, "Damn, if I get any closer I'll have to cut the buttons off my shirt."

Had a cowboy from Pinscher Creek Alberta tell me that his horse raised its tail to take a crap and the bit got blown out of its mouth.

On the other hand, its usually pretty calm in western Washington. We had two windmills on the place when I was growing up, and we finally had to take one of them down- we just didn't have enough wind to run 'em both.

I've heard in windy Lethbridge Alberta that if the wind stops blowing, the cows fall over.

Yup, lived there too, college days... had to put rocks in pocket to keep from blowing away, trouble was when wind stopped you would fall over too. never get lost in this country, everything leans to the east...

It's so windy here I had to take the saddle blanket off of my horse and shove it in his rear to keep the bit in his mouth.

I think it goes,
When the rock is dry it is sunny
when the rock is wet it is raining
when the rock is white it is snowing
when the rock is sticking out it is windy
and when the rock is gone... tornado!
