I just completed a restoration on a 1950 "B" Pic posted in pic forum. I say lets raise the bar on fine restorations for these beast. I spent three years(200hrs)and 2K (parts alone) on this one. Do you think 3'500 - 4'000 is to much for a COMPLETE restoration? Give me some feed back please, before I sell at a low price. Thanks Steve Wilson NC

Thanks for the input! The B is not for sell at thi in reply to Steve Moore, 03-03-2005 14:57:20
I've gained more from you at this forum / web site, in terms of knowlage and restorations. I've learned a lot about working with tools, techniques and people. This project has taught me much more about folks.Farmers and old timers who will give their time to help out a youngster. I have life long frends because of the "B". Ready to start another project! J.Deere "40". America is a live and well! Thanks Steve

I'd suggest listing the gem on eBay with a reserve to meet your needs. Also, you might check with the Orange Crowd to see if there is someone who is interested in a quality piece. The money is out there. Good Luck,

Will I pay it? Not at this point in time, too many other things in line in front of it. Would I pay it? Yes I think it would be a fair price. If it is what I call a COMPLETE restoration.

I am considerably farther West in NC. Sad to say that it probably would not go for more than about $2500 here. The B has a very limited hydraulic system- great engine- poor road gear.

I've stood at a local farm auction and watched a unrestored AC "B" with a belly mower bring $4200 (and the steering had about 8" of play). Just check the photo ads and see a MM UDLX priced at $180K, and your "B" looks like a bargain!

The sad part of it is that none of these old tractors will ever be worth what it costs to do a complete restoration. You should never undertake a restoration in the hopes of making money on it. On the other hand, you might just get lucky and find the right buyer. Just don't be in a hurry to sell it.

Rusty, I agree with you 100%. I'd bet that that B is worth every penny, and more. Unfortunately the market of tractors of lesser value will bring the price down, and undeservedly so. But them's the breaks.

Remember the 3010 that went for $20K a month or so ago? Personally, not for me. But then again, maybe $20K aint so bad if was a total restoration, especially when considering that new tin and plastic Deere garden tractors go for $6K at Home Depot with nothing more than a belly mower. Still, no $20K for me - I'd rather buy a beater and fix it my way, my choice.

Nonetheless, there will be someone willing, and bless them, especially if they use it in good health and enjoy it. Can certainly ask $4K, and should. Absolutely should because can always drop the price if have to, would be hard to raise it though. Can't hurt to ask or try, especially if doesn't have to sell to begin with. Best of luck, sincerely.

Mark

It is worth every penny of 4000 plus. I cut my teeth on a 1949 model. It has got to be one of the toughest tractors for its' size ever built.
I've tried to find the 4th. or 5th. owner without any luck. Should have never let the ole girl be sold. Good thing it did not have an hour meter.
Nobody would have believed it.
Glad to hear you restored one of the best pullers in its' class.

Oh, I absolutely believe you. No argument from me. A fully restored B? Every penny of that $4K and more, no arguement from me. But it's one of those market things.

If he tried to sell or trade it to a dealer, he'd get raped. If tries to sell it to someone that knows tractors, will say "Can get a B for $1,500", totally overlooking that this B is basically brand new, and the $1,500 job might be nice, but doesn't compare. I think Rusty's point, as was mine is that can put $$$ and time and sweat into doing what he did, but unfortunately the lower prices of the others will work against you.

No arguement here though. This B is worth every penny and more, even if sells it and doesn't walk away with much more than pride, unfortunately.

Mark

But the market just doesn't seem to support your statement.
