This off topic ,,but I feel very important for gun owners everywhere .There is a proposed bill here that will ban so called assault weapon guns and pistols . After reading the wording on this carefully ,it looks like it can be any gun they see fit to call an "offenseive weapon" . This means semi auto rifles & pistols with detachable magazines, any kind of shroud , thumbhole grips , barrel studs , muzzle brakes . This is a feel good Bill being pushed by "iowans for pervention of gun violence " . Sen Mary Lundby is co sponsoring this bill . This will do nothing to pervent crime, gun deaths or violence . Once it starts here,,it matter of time before it trickles down to other types of guns. We need to contact Sen Lundby and let her know this is total garbage ! (Mary.lundby@Legis.state.ia.us) Also your local state senators and David Miller(david.miller@legis.state.ia.us) & Keith Kreiman(Keith.kreiman@legis.state.ia.us) Judiciary co chairs ,who are looking over this file . Give them an earfull .remind them of Iowa's motto "Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain " Sorry for the rant ,,but I feel it's important to all gun owners nationwide .

Is this a private fight or can anyone get in? It may interest some of you to know that big game hunting is alive and well in S. Africa. Sound management practices using the hunt as a population control measure have resulted in extremely healthy herds of elephant (did someone already mention them?), rhino and cape buffalo. A positive aspect of it is that it provides about 70,000 people with a living. If you're planning to go there to hunt take something big - like maybe a .460 Weatherby. Come to think of it,.50 cal should do just fine!

I don"t think there should be a ban on the quantity of guns I just lean towards the need.
What do you need a 50 cal or a machine gun for?
If those two robbers in Cal with the body armor had 50 cals they could have shot the cops through their cars and through walls.
A lady I knew had a gun at a store and the only one ever shot with it was her. She also had one at home and when her husband was cleaning it he shot and killed his 3 year old boy.
A guy I worked with, him and his two sons all had bullet wounds from their black powder hobby.
A police officer at the local station was cleaning his gun and shot himself in the leg.
Two young G.I.s who were brothers were playing quick draw and one killed the other. These are some stories from when I was in my teens to early twenties. I guess this is all just thinning the species a little. Maybe there should be a gun safety course mandatory in schools, maybe required three times by graduation. El,Mid, HS
On the previous farm thread. All my farm cousins were missing fingers or other parts. I guess that will teach them not to stick their hand there again. Some of that farm learnin.

Couple or few weeks back an 80+ yearold guy in SouthBend, IN. shot and killed a guy breaking into his house. His house had been broken into 3 times by the guy. First time, the guy got away. Second time, the guy got sent up for a few years for doing it, and promised to get even when he got out. Third time was a charm, he's pushing daisies now. Came to the old timers house and began kicking the door in. The old timer kept yelling "I've got a gun". The bum kicked the door in, and the old timer had a gun - bless his heart. The cops took up a collectin to get his door fixed up - bless their hearts.

A few months ago in a richy lakeshore suburb north of Chicago, a family's house got broken into while they were home. Of the things stolen were an automobile of theirs. The next night while going to bed, the husband heard something downstairs and went down to investigate. The guy that broke in the night before was back, and let himself in using the keys he stole the night before. The husband shot him, sending him through a window, but not killing him, unfortunately. Initially the cops charged the guy with breaking and entering, and the home owner for having an illegal handgun in his own home (law against handguns in that town), and charged him for shooting the burglar to protect his family in their own home. The burglar gets a breaking and entering, the home owner gets the book thrown at him. Made national news. Guess what? The morons running the town backed off, lowering the home owner's charges down to having an improperly registered weapon. And why? Because the morons running the town had far too too too many invitations to have their heads handed to them by common sense law abiding citizens that have had enough of the bull$hit. Bless their hearts (the citizens, not the morons).

We had better ban motor vehicles, bicycles, little league baseball, all racket sports and privately owned swimming pools. We need to ban mountain climbing and skiing of all types while we are at it. A total ban on alcohol and tobacco would be the First and Foremost priority for the public good. The news media has a couple of favourites, aircraft crashes and firearm incidents. Doesn't matter how rare something happens per capita, per miles traveled or how far away it occurred. It's dramatically and loudly shoved into our faces as the #1 public menace. As for suicides, the Swedes and Japanese have no problem being the worlds highest statistics yet firearms are virtually banned in those countries.

I just really wish we would go back to the "rule of law"; 2nd Amendment says nothing about "need". As far as the law, local newspaper reported (I realize the media is not the most reliable source of information) that the Supreme Court..... with quotes by Justices..... decided a recent case (whether or not teenagers could be executed) on the basis of "general consensus of public opinion"; heaven help us if that's how cases are to be decided rather than what the law(s) say. If the laws are wrong, let's change them; until then, let's enforce them..... .

Yes I do. Now what crap are you talking about. All these people are who I knew personally or are related.
The Cal cops were under fire powered because the public had bigger guns (assault rifles). Go figure.
Now once again, what do you need a 50 cal. for? Elephants in your neighborhood?

Well my opinion here. The cali shoot out made for great TV ,,great ammo for gun grabbers . I think the real reson it dragged out was un trained police force . Face it ,,they folded under fire . Automatic pistols and more bullets does not make up for lack of accuracy ! All it required was couple head shots , body armor no problem ! Sure it's easy to armchair QB this when not getting shot at, but why didn't the cops have M16's on hand? In reality all that did was throw more bullets at crooks instead of few well placed shots . The AK' used in shoot out were already banned , in cali ,,and US , Fully auto guns have been banned for long time ! So gun laws really worked there didn't they ? As far as .50 's being used by crooks,,,I doubt they can afford one or the ammo . Plus they are not something you can really carry around all that well . and to shot them and gather yourself up after is well,,,,lets just say ,,"aftershock " lol

Well I need a 50 cal bacause I love to watch a handfull of local gents target shoot with them ,it takes a lot of skill to hit a 6" circle from 3/4 of a mile away. In my mind if you ban 50s we also better ban bowling bacause if you really check your facts you will discover that more people have been beaten to death with bowling balls and pins than ever have been shot with a 50cal rifle. Infact no crimes on record have ever been comitted with a 50cal rifle, and don't take this wrong but everybody you know that has been injuried by a firearm appears to be dumber than a box of rocks .Nobody in there right mind cleans a loaded weapon and these people that do should be arrested for public endangerment they are the problem not the guns.A loaded gun can sit for thousands of years and do no harm it's the morons that you are related to that pick them up that hurt others or there selves..

I notice in a lot of these discussions instead of replying to the discussion you get answers of "motor vehicles, bicycles, little league etc" yours was just handy buickanddeere, something always out of left field. Just a comment on the way some people answer.

Most of the activities you have mentioned have some safty built in; seat belts, batters helmet etc.
Some of the activities should be outlawed. Like everytime a rescue helicopters crashes pulling some idiot off a mountain.

TLAK

Let's see. A few bruised shoulders from the 300Win and I too did catch a slide on the web of the thumb from the wife's Ruger. As for suicides?I can think of a few drug over doses, hangings, vehicles driven off the road into a tree at 85mph into a tree without any skid marks. Several who drank them selves to death. One who smothered in an oxygen limited silo, three incidents that killed 7 people with toxic fumes in manure pits. And someone who was testing his car in the garage without opening any doors or windows. Around here the sensible people rate firearms in there with useful tools like knifes, axes, hammers, skill saws etc. Just know what you are doing and pay attention. In do know of two individuals who are accidents waiting to happen. They had already used up several of nine lives on bicycles, motor vehicles etc. One was drunk as a skunk and grazed his foot climbing over a fence. The other was shooting a pellet gun down a length of pipe or something. Got the pellet back in the face. There isn't anything on the face of this earth that some idiot can't miss use. Why get all fascinated with the firearm instead of the person? I don't hear anyone blaming a vehicle or booze for drunk drivers and wanting to ban vehicles. TLAK, how about you move to England where it is illegal to defend yourself from assault & battery. A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded s*xual and emotional maturity." TLAK With all these horror stories or careless, malicious or depressed people you associate with. There must be a very high rate of injury and death from anything else they do or touch as well. In the nearest big city the worst known killer since Paul Benardo and his wife Karla. Is/was a immigrant with aids. In the three years since he left his wife. He has had 13 women that's known of and six officially have aids. One women is dead already. That aids guy didn't pickup or use any offensive weapon he stole, found, made or bought. How about finding, punishing, controlling evil and stupid people? That is where the problem is.

"it is impossible to clean a gun when there is a shell in the chamber"

You can clean everything except the chamber with a shell in it. There's nothing about a shell in the chamber that prevents you from running as wab down the barrel, spraying down the firing mechanism, etc.

I remember when a Congressman from Illinois tried to ban 50 caliber assult rifles that the military uses. He said someone could climb to the roof of the Sears Tower downtown and shoot the Cub's Sammy Sosa as he rounded the bases at the ballpark like 40, 50, or 60 blocks north. How many civilians or citizens have ever been shot and killed by one of those 50 caliber military assult rifles, ever? To date, zero. What a "feel good" moron, whom is now the Governor of Illinois. Out of touch politicians should stay out of touch by locking themselves up in cotton lined closets.

Like I said in my earlier post. You can ban them, and that will only take them away from people who follow the law, not from the bad guys and they will NEVER stop them, I don't care what they do, or how illegal they make it, people who don't follow the law sure aren't going to stop because they make a law against it. They could make it illegal for all assault weapons, pistols, rifles, and anything that goes bang in the entire country, and all this will do is give the smugglers more to smuggle, the bad guys will always have a supply of them. same as how the U.S boarder has tried to stop illegal immigants from coming into the country, and drugs, and look at how they aren't able to stop it all, theres underground tunnels across the boarder and everything. Keep watch for programs on T.V for stuff on the boarders and it's a real eye opener, people have come up with some very inventive ways to sneak stuff.
If guns were done away with all that would do is take away public saftey because people wouldn't be able to defend themselves from the bad guys. Where do you think those bad guys got those full auto AK47's used in california shoot out?, you sure can't buy those from the gun shops.

Never appologize for pointing out the follies of our leftist pals.

It just amazes me how coniving and underhanded the lefties can be. Americans want their freedom of gun ownership and the outright attempts to criminalize them failed miserably. Now we are seeing the subtle attempts to woe us into giving up our guns, and it will fail also. Next will be the judges making a ruling on the unconstitutionality of gun ownership.

I would be very curious to hear how our friends to the north feel about this issue???

What we will find is a leftist court such as the 9th in California that will step up to the plate to help further this insanity. Or possibly a rogue judge in BFE will decide he is supreme to all the "little people" and try to use his courtroom to dictate our freedoms.

Dug, you're absolutely right. It wasn't the Supreme Court that said that, otherwise the libs would have been pounding at our doors long ago trying to trade flowers for our guns. And I'm not sure that was those idiots at the 9th in California either. But I am thinking that it was a federal judge, just the same, and was like 6 months or so ago. Was an idiot just the same, that much I remember.

I remember a recent special on some channel, and didn't realize that a sitting president could fire an entire federal court by just abolishing it. It happened once under one of our presidents, very early on. Jefferson maybe? I don't recall which one. Would be pretty politically incorrect to do today, but apparently can be done, and has. Personally, I think George W. oughta set his sites on the 9th. And when he gets done with them, he oughta call me up and invite me down to Crawford to go bass fishing with shotguns, because we can. LOL.

Already has. Don't recall where, but remember hearing about it at the time. Some judge said "the right to bare arms" applies to the militias only, not citizens.

This morning I heard one that made the hair on the back of my neck standup. A new proposed law giving judges special rights and protections. It happened in the wake of that judge in Chicago going home and finding her husband and mother murdered. On face value, sounds ok, but what about long term? What I mean is that will probably get you or me jail time if we talk bad about or criticize judges - we will be seen as a threat. Will give judges even more chances to legislate from the benches that they already have now, and can't be questioned or badmouthed, because that will make whomever says or does it a "terrorist". Yeah, take an unfortunate incident like what happened to that judge and her family, and use it to play off of the sympathies of society to take their (our) rights away before anyone realizes that just lost another freedom.

When a politician wraps his/her arm around your shoulder and say "Have I got a deal for you", they aint jokin, and history is proof. "Overlook his voting record over the past twenty years for the newly invented him?", yeah, right.

I admit it; we are paranoid..... .with good reason; read buickanddeere's post below; we think it can't happen here; I'm sure the other English speaking nations thought that also. We do have the guns, but sadly, the gun grabbers have the media and to a large extent, the judiciary.

Gun control laws are a joke for the most part, all it's going to do is make something more for the underground markets to peddle. All this is going to do is take them away from law abiding citizens, and have no effect on the bad guys whom they are trying to keep them from, same with gun registration, not very effective in my opinion. Why?, because maybe a guy who has a felony can't go into a gun shop and legally buy one, but he can steal one from somewheres or buy one off somebody as there are no background checks with private sales and the paper is full of guns around hunting season. Skilled machinests can make guns or they can be smuggled in from elsewhere and don't forget people will do anything for money.

Jonboy, you are absolutely right. As to the comments on "concealed carry" below, this is also borne out by every study ever done fairly. The problem most concealed carry laws have is that there are so many "exceptions" as to where you can carry which forces leaving the gun unattended in your vehicle when going to church, school, hospital and countless other places. This allows the crooks open season on stealing guns. It should be "carry at anytime, anyplace.

Ask your lawmakers..."Where have gun laws reduced crime?" I don't think they would be able to tell you.

The whole term "assault weapon" has been so overused that the general public has become conditioned to accepting this daily diet of hand-fed media garbage as the truth.

As far as "fully automatic weapons" go...there have been federal laws regarding these since the 1930's. Local state regulations would have no effect, other than providing the desired level of inconvenience to the law abiding gun owner.

There...I'll get down off the soap box!!! Good Luck

The US is the last country with some firearm rights. Australia, Canada and England just went they a registartion and banning session to disarm the public. Dont think "it can't happen here". The rest of the world's gneral public was disarmed decades ago. The Social Engineers know that an outright ban is impossible. However if they are are patient, a total ban is possible when rights are slowly taken bit by bit. A strong anti message built into every TV show and movie is a great mind conditioning tool.

Allan and Leland, it is just totally amazing how a lightening strike can sometimes ignite a brush pile. I have even seen it happen with a pile of discarded tires, and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. There was no one around, the tires caught fire, must have been the lightning that did it.
(and no, it wasn't my tires)

Now you are talking! Neighbor down the street found a moldy bale in her barn last summer. She tossed it out back and lit a match to it. You can imagine the smoke. Not really much in the way of flames. Fire department pulled in and fined her. Probably a neighbor sore about something. All the burning ban did was give crabby neighbors a tool to use against others.
I would just as soon that assault weapons were not around, but you have to be careful how those laws are worded or someone will turn it to their own special use.

I don't mean to step on Dave's toes, but an "assualt weapon" is normally defined, by the lefties, as a gun that looks really, really mean!

Please give your definition of 'assault weapons'. Does it include Winchester model 12s or Mossberg 500s? Does it include Ruger 10/22s? Marlin/Glenfeild model 60s? Semi-automatic pistols other than Steyr-Hahns? M1 carbines? RN

Yep,

Day by day, little by little, and bit by bit, we are slowly losing every darned freedom we ever had. It is moving so slow that it isn't noticed from one generation to the next.

But, step out your front door (which belongs to you), stand in your front yard (which belongs to you) and take a wizz.

Or, shoot the neighbor's dog which has just killed one of your newborn calves.

You will then be eating free lunches, compliments of the county, within the hour. :>(

Allan et al --

The talk above reminds me of a book I borrowed from my local library last year: "When I Was A Kid, This Was A Free Country," by G.G. Liddy. In it, he laments the decline of American freedoms -- among them some very basic ones -- and describes many of the same circumstances referenced in your postings.

Unfortunately, we are being overrun by those who see government as a benevolent, all-knowing father who provides money/benefits/etc. from a bottomless treasury, forgetting that it is our tax money which is disappearing in ever-greater amounts to fund this "bottomless" largesse. These same folks have forgotten that people such as Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, Madison (among others) wanted to establish a nation where a man could stand on his own two feet and be free to succeed (or even fail) based on his own merits and work ethic, free from the interference of others. Yes, government was needed, but only to a certain degree. As James Madison said, "They govern best, that govern least."

Have we become so open-minded as a society, that our brains have fallen out?

I'm truly glad that most of the folks who frequent this forum are level-headed Americans...

Just my 2¢ worth...

Wouldn't a lot of our changes go naturally as a result of more people in the same space? The more populated areas seem to have more laws. Heck, here in WI we can't carry concealed weapons. Have to think the way we drink this would be a population control. lol A lot boils down to that was then, this is now. I'm not saying we can't improve, but when we look to a lot of countries we have it pretty good. Some countries seem real good. Have to admit GW really pushes my buttons quite often. By the way how did you get a cent key on your keyboard or don't Walmart sell that kind. lol

Bill in Wisconsin –

I don’t really want to get into the subject of politics, as that seems to really feed the “flame wars” – and most of us on this site are here to discuss old iron and our love for it and farming the way it used to be. Nobody needs any more hurt feelings or personal attacks (and Kim is probably tired of playing the role of baby-sitter). . .

As for concealed-carry laws, the statistics I have seen indicate a drop in crime rates when the bad guys don’t know if their victims are going to be armed or not.

For those who believe gun bans work, please explain the situation in our nation’s capital. Washington, D.C. has had an outright ban on all handguns since 1976 and a ban on long guns (rifles/shotguns) unless the owner has been a permanent resident of the District since that date *and* owned them at the time the ban went into effect. The streets of our capital should be safe from gun-toting bad guys, no? But somehow DC manages to have the second-highest number of gun deaths *in the country* (and sometimes claims first place). Just one more reason I lived in Virginia and commuted in to the District when I was in the Navy and stationed there. . .

As for the “¢” in my posting, this crafty Yankee has to admit to a bit of creativity…I composed my posting in Microsoft Word, then cut-and-pasted it into the reply box. (In MS Word, to get a “¢” you press the “Control” key on the lower left of your keyboard and the slash at the same time, then just press the letter C. Works every time…)

More of my 2¢ worth. . . Let’s see, that makes 4¢ now. I’d better keep track, ’cause I’ll probably be taxed on it.
