I know a guy who fabricated a setup and turned an iron duke into a generator. They are quiet, reliable little engines, and he is real happy with his. I don't know exactly how he set it up, but can't imagine it would be too difficult.

That iron duke 4 banger is a totally different animal than what was used in the later front wheel drive cars.

The Iron Duke is a later 4 cyl cast iron head/block engine that was loosly based on the 60's Chevy 2 engines.I dont believe there is any parts interchange between chevy 2 and iron duke engines. Almost all the industrial 4 cyl Chevy engines were the early Chevy 2 version. Several brands of self propelled swathers(Massey,Oliver,Owatona) used the 4 cyl Chevy 2 engines. I never found any ag tractor applications for chevy engines. The later style 250-292 6 cyl was used in various combines, but I do not recall any usage of the old style 235 engines in ag stuff.

Re: CHEVY 4 CYL Nova? in reply to Jon H, 02-28-2005 07:50:11
You're right, but I think Iron Duke was strictly Pontiac, and crossmounted. Chev's engine called something else. I've got the 4 cyl in a 1969 Nova and in an old Merc Inboard/Outboard. For a short while, some guys put them in Model A Fords. I don't think they work out very well because they have such short stroke and low torque. AMC also made a 4 cyl by cutting back on their six. It was used until recently, including in Dodge Dakotas. It also is too short stroke. There might be some class of racing that could use them??

Jon, are you sure about that? I have been kickin' around since 1951, so I was here when Chevrolet introduced the Chevy II in 1962. That cast-iron 4 banger has always been referred to as the iron duke.

I stand corrected,What had me confused was that GM built 2 different engine familys, both with the "iron Duke" name. The Chevy 153 CI Iron Duke with Standard head with both intake and exhaust manifold on the same side built untill 69.And the Pontiac built 151 CI iron duke with a cross flow head with intake manifold on one side and exhaust manifold on the other side, built in the 80's.

A bit more about Chevy and Pontiac iron duke engines copied from the internet.

Iron Dukes: the old (153 ci) Iron Duke four cylinder engines, last produced in 1970, were essentially 230s with two cylinders lopped off. They had a 3.875 bore and 3.25 stroke, 8.5:1 compression ratio, 1bbl carbs and made 90 hp, 152 ft-lbs. Therefore, rods, pistons, valvetrain and engine accessories interchange between those two engines. Pontiac produced a similar-sized (151 ci/2.5L), but completely different four-cylinder in the 80s and 90s, also called the Iron Duke. Very few parts interchange from those engines.
