I am wanting to buy a good used 45-50 horse JD no more than 15 years old. I would prefer a turbo model and of course, want wet brakes and power steering. I want a Deere because I like Deeres, no other reason. What model can you fellows recommend (year/size) that fills this requirement and is know for reliability. I would consider an older unit if one could be found with low hours. I need no brand war started and I'm not interested in an antique regardless of what ol' Pappy did with his. Thanks men.

Mark, I'll take a stab at it. Not a recomendation though. I guess first of all, why do you want a 45-50 horse tractor? That's pretty good sized, and might be bigger than what you need, and not big enough. Some favor front wheel assist, and need it. Some might be using them in an orchard, and don't need it, and 45-50 HP would be bigger than need for that. You got a Deere dealer near you so can get parts as you need them? Maybe you have a IH/Case or New Holland dealer near by, and the nearest Deere dealership for parts is a few counties over - it happens, and vica-versa. It's your money and can do whatever you want with it, anyhow you want, but whatever you buy with it, may want to make sure it fits your needs and be able to get parts or service as well. You can get power steering on just about any Deere, I think. What does your Deere dealer have used, or the local farmers?

As far as being no older than 15 years old, well it's your call, but you might be selling yourself short. All is up to you though, is your money. Many might be happy to give an opinion, but might be easier if knew what the application is. Might try the Deere board here as well. Good luck.

I mow a 3 acre yard and bushog another 5 acres of hill ground.....besides plowing and working a 2 acree garden. I have a JD 1050..about 33 HP and it is plenty for what I do, BUT it is too light and has dry brakes and no PS. I have an excellent JD dealer here. I want the weight of a larger tractor to keep the front end where it belongs when hogging. I don't NEED 50 horses but want the weight a tractor that size provides. I also want something fairly new. 4 wd isn't needed but wouldn't be shunned. If I could have a 5,000 pound tractor with 35 horses, I'd be happy.....an old 830 would work but they're getting long in the tooth and i'm not into antiques and working on something all the time. I once had a farmer neighbor tell me....you can do small work with a big tractor but not big work with a small tractor..well, i don't have any big work to do, but I've had my share of small tractors and tired of them. Folks like old iron to tinker with but they ain't worth a damn for using IMHO. I had a '56 CA and a '59 JD 430....PITA's. This little 1050 has been an excellent machine but too light.

Well Mark, it's clear that you know what you're looking for and why. I hate to say it, but you're probably stuck with recomendations from your Deere dealer. Personally, I hate dealing with dealers other than parts because they've got an inventory that they have to contend with, and sell, and make a profit, because no one likes working for free - me neither. Maybe they've got some trade-ins? Maybe a local farmer too?

And you're absolutely right, a big tractor can do small jobs, but a small tractor can't do big ones. If I were you, I'd pretty much take your reply to my post over to the Deere board and ask. Also, is another site linked through here somehow, that I can't find through here, but can get under "www.todaystractors.com" - is a sister site to this one. I was there once a week or so ago. Give it a shot.

Have you tried or considered putting weights on your 1050? Could be a cheaper option than buying a bigger tractor.

That ought to be a no-brainer, but i'll answer.....sure have considered weights and use them. However, when you add 150 pounds to the front end it is such sa PITA to turn the steering wheel when in a tight place. I have also searched high and low for aftermarket PS kits and even used ones....no luck. I have looked at lots of machines...all brands....and when i find a 10-15 year old machine...it looks like it's 35 years old, been gutted, ran hard and put up wet. I bought my current tractor when it had 337 hours on it...a cherry. That was 22 years ago and it still only has 1470 hours! How i wish it had been a 1250 instead of a 1050.
