Only ones I've seen have been in WC or WD Allis. It would be fairly easy to do it in a 50's Massey Harris. That big cast frame could hold anything. They used Mopar and Continental engines, both flatheads, though. The Continental was used in many models of Kaiser Willys vehicles and Checker Cabs. The nicest substitution I can remember was a big old plow tractor, an IHC WK40 with a big old V8 Hemi engine. Looked like it was just right.

I met a fellow who stuck a 235 Chevy engine in an Allis D17 diesel tractor when the original engine blew up and he couldn't afford to fix it. It worked pretty good, actually. Just about the right HP and physical size.

The 235 Chevy was made from 1953 to 1962. Lots of homemade tractors used the earlier 216 Chevy engine.

My uncle had a model 55 combine (1969 I think) with a 292 Chevy in it.

1969 55 combine used a 303 Deere gas engine(I bought one new). For the life of me I never figured why Deere opted to use the chevy 292 3 years later in the 4400.The Deere 303 gas engine was one of the better gas engines Deere ever built.Same design as the 329 Diesel.

Patrick, Massey, 410 combine ran a chevy 292, straight 6. The 510 Massey combine had the 283/327 V8.
Later,
John A.

I think some of the early self propelled combines Deere made had Chevy engines but I think they were 292's. The Red kad one for a while so you might ask him over on the Tractor Tales board.

1973 Deere 4400 used the Chevy 292 gas engine but it was quickly dropped since it always ran too hot in the combine.
