I just paid 45.00 for three 100 lb. bales of alfalfa. I should have keep my Dad's hay business going. Dad raised oat hay. Oat hay is almost as expensive as alfalfa now. Stan

My little wife (bless her heart!) makes me buy hay (not straw) for bedding in the dog house during the winter. I've been paying $4.75 a square bale for Coastal, and thought I'd been taken for a ride....
I'm glad she hasn't asked for alfalfa! :)

Howdy,

Boy chief, if you were in S. Ohio I"d be happy to help you out. I"ve sold johnson grass hay (cut prior to seeding) that weighed probably 60lbs. for $1.00 each. Orchard grass and timothy for 1.50. Sold 1st cutting alfalfa (40-50lbs ea.)for 2.00 each, 2nd cutting for 1.50, and 3rd cutting for 3.00 each. There are several people around here who don"t make a lot of money so I try to keep it cheap to help them out. Honestly, I"ve had a hard time moving much of it this winter up until last week. I"m runnin thin now after business picked up. Got less than 50 bales of everything except some johnson grass that has a little mold. Oh, and the 300 bales of straw too. God bless.

Don't mean to stir thing up here -----but---
Try buying new balers, haybines , rakes, tractors etc.and then try to pay for them by selling hay as cheaply as most buyers want to pay. Years ago, I wanted to replace my NH 268 baler ($2300 new, hay $20./ton), new JD 337 at nearly $20,000 and hay $60./ton. You do the math!Just remember that GOOD hay is the cheapest feed any animal will need.We are nearly the only ones producing horse hay in our area now as others have found it much easier to produce soys and wheat.

Having been on both ends of this I can see that happening. Come this time of year if you run short and can't get a hold of your hay guy or he tells you he is sold out...man, you'll pay what it takes. The last few years in Michigan hay gets pretty scarce in late winter and them what have it get pretty stingy about parting with it.
Guess that is why mine sells from the field before I get it home. Most horse people are a little scared of colic and would rather go long on a few bales short term than play with the feed.
My take on the situation anyway.

The neighbor stopped over last night for some horse hay, and bought 3 large round bales of alfalfa / brome for $20 per bale. Lets see: Figures out about $26 per ton....no wonder our farming operation is always short of red ink in the bookkeeping department!

That does bring up an interesting point, though- round bales seem to be half price (or less, in your case) compared to small squares- makes you wonder if the savings in labor (or bale wagons) is really worth it. I also see in Farm Show that people are "unwinding" round bales into a small square baler in the winter, and selling the squares.

Chief,

Oh my, that's a little high. What's hay worth these days? $70 or $80 a ton?
