I"ve got a good McCollough chainsaw that has lost its fire and my local dealer said that since that company went bankrupt five years ago they can no longer get parts to repair it. This is the first time it has ever quit and I hate to have to buy a new chainsaw. Any ideas on where to get parts or what might cross over to fix it? Thanks.

Try a carb kit. If you haven't rebuilt it for a few years those rubbers are probably stiff and won't move the fuel. Those carbs are probably used on other saws also. Look for a name and model on it and you will probably find it at a good chainsaw shop or some small engine shop.

I fixed a old Homelite with the same problem 2 days ago. The problem was in the plug wire not the coil itself. I cut the plug wire off about 1" from the coil, took another wire and spliced it in. Used black tape and then heat shrink tube to seal every thing up good. Runs as good as new.

This may not be the problem with yours but it until I figured this out I was about the throw the saw away, I was not going to spend $70.00 for a new coil to go on a 30 year old saw.

I'm confused about McCulloch. Are they starting up again? Lately I was in a Home Depot and saw some McCulloch tools. Like you, I have their saws- 4 of them, biggest is a model 800.

Have you determined why yours doesn't run? No spark- compression- fuel? If you take out the spark plug and put some gas in the cylinder, then replace the plug, will it fire? Last fall my 20+ year old bread and butter 650 wouldn't start, but when I put a little gas in the cylinder it would fire a few seconds. For some reason it wasn't getting gas- lost its prime. I got to thinking about it and decided to try something. If I could somehow pressurize the gas tank for a couple seconds it might prime the carb. Not thinking of any other easy way to do this I took off the gas cap and put my mouth to the mostly full tank and put pressure to it for a few seconds. To my surprise after that it fired right up! Unfortunately I let the first tankful run out and had to do basically the same thing to get it going again- now I won't let it run out of fuel.

I would buy a parts machine off of ebay, they seem to go pretty cheap.
I run a Mac too, and like the saw but it is a bit small for my needs, it is a homeowners saw and great for pruning or limbing but not a tree felling saw.

Depending on what you are using the saw for...if it is just light use you can buy a recon 20" Poulan Pro off of ebay for 95 bucks.

I also found this link for Mac parts...

Good luck
