Pulled the head off the TO-30 Engine and to my suprise it had been gone thru. New valves, springs, ect and it was not even painted yet! Compression was nice at 125 lbs hot in 3 cylinders and 130 lbs in one. Standard Bore Pistons with very little ridge. Tonight I get to pull the pan and check the bearing just to be safe. It holds good oil pressure hot but you never know till you look. Mark H.

Why did you take it apart? Call me dumb but if it isn"t broke don"t fix it.

Fill the combustion chambers with atf then see if the ports are dry the next morning.

Well they held gasoline for a while when it was sitting on the bench befor I cleaned it, that was a good sign. Just pulled the some of the bearing caps and the crank looks good and is turned .020 on the Rods and Mains so lots of room on the crank for several rebuilds if needed. Mark H.

Re: Blocks not cracked are hard to find in reply to vapet, 02-23-2005 15:54:34
TO 30s like to crack the webs in the block to the wet sleave water jacket. After I clean the inside of the block I will be able to tell for sure. No water in the oil and the Fergusons pans come off easy. It had a problem with not running real good but now I think it was the carb causing it. Mark H.

Only way to know how it is on the inside. Not that big a deal to tear it down then you know for sure. Nothing like painting one up all nice and having the engine start giving you trouble. These engines are easy to work on. Mark H.

Sure looks better than mine did when I pulled the head on my latest project tractor that the seller said the engine was not stuck...

But didn't look as bad as Kelly C's!

I use a light wire cup brush and a porting brush on a small drill motor. You need to be carful useing one of those plastic scruber drill disks they can take off metal and cause you to have to deck the head or block for a good seal. Purple Castrol Cleaner is a great parts cleaner to remove junk and a pressure washer to blast it off. Be sure to WD 40 every thing afterwords for moisture reasons or heat the block and oil it down again. Mark H.

My first TO-30 I bought and restored had a hole in the side of the block from a rod. Figured I could just replace the rod and patch the whole in it. No luck when I got into the engine it had cracks between the webs not caused by the rod! Ended up having to get a new block and was lucky to find one for it. That tractor is still running great from the fix done 3 years ago and was my first tractor I owned. It has not had anything done to it except oil changes and tune ups. Wish I still had it now. Just once I'd like to find a trctor that is that clean and in that good of condition. BNever fails, I always end up with a cracked head/chipped seat, rust, and occasionally part of a mouse nest! Looks like you've got a easy project thus far. Make sure you check your seals/gaskets, and good luck!

Bad part was it did not leak any oil! Been haveing questions about is it good? All I could say is it ran and had good oil pressure and compression. Now I know why and the bearings are next. Saying it runs is not good enought for some. It has to be parted because the back haft is going on another tractor. I just lucked out and got a good one to get that part off of. Wish it was a Massey 135 I could use a few spare parts for mine like the engine! I do like working on them still even if I don't get to keep it. Mark H.

Having fun taking a tractor apart to see how good it is. I bought it because my neibor needed the complete rear end assembly off it. He has a TO-30 and needed to replace the back end. I need to know how good the rest of it is befor I sell it. The only way you know is to take them apart first and get rid of the quessing. I will just put it back together as it is inspected. I see what you mean. I did clean the head gaskit off and spiffed up the piston tops some. Can't see problems or read the piston size till there cleaned up some. Mark H.

Thanks! I wish others did that for me. They allways leave me quessing to cover anything wrong. They just say I know nothhing about the tractor I just drove it for a while. Only takes once to get a bad name on these sites!! Do some one wrong you never hear the end of it, do them right and there happy. Mark H.

I did some remodeling for a real picky customer. Well, it turned out that they weren't just picky, they were broke too! Seems to go hand in hand with some jobs, and some buyers I think.
