I've got a JD60 and after running it for about 20 minutes the manifold and muffler pipe are glowing hot. The muffler is not plugged. But sometimes it acts like it is underpower and sometimes likes to backfire. any help

I can still remember my dads F 12 exhaust manifold glowing red. This would show up at night. He would cut beans at night to keep the beans from shelling out, due to the heat of the day. To see the manifold glowing during the day may be a problem. Would a lean mixture cause this? Stan

Like the other guys said, check your initial igbition timing and distributor advance and make sure that your mixture isn't too lean (carb adjustment or leaky induction system downstream of the carburetor). You can burn exhaust valves up running like this

Mikrot, my guess is that you or someone before has had the governor off of your tractor and mis-timed it. Your tractor has the classic symptoms of someone lining up the timing marks from the camshaft with the ones on the governor. If the flywheel is correctly installed and the slots in the flywheel are horizontal the distributor drive slots will be horizontal as well. And the "V" mark on the governor drive gear will either be straight up or straight down (either way will work). DO NOT line up the governor "V" mark with the camshaft mark. Mike

sounds to me like a timing problem. if not that then runnin too lean.

Timing? Too lean?

I assume this is under no real load, just running?

Agree with the others. Red hot exhaust system us usually very retarded timing or stuck advance weights in the distributor not allowing any spark advance at speed. check timing and advance with a timing light. Spark should advance smoothly from the initial setting as rpm increases.
