A few weeks ago I asked about a tractor which was built early 1900's that was rein steered. I had several suggestions and someone was going to send a picture. I am still looking for some information on this particular tractor. If anyone could come up with a picture that would be great. Please see if you can help. Thanks for all of you who responded previously.

Fella that owns this also has a La Crosse rein drive tractor. I don't seem to have a picture of that.

Well as much as I'd like to go along with Rufus, I think this is what you're looking for - The Sampson Iron Horse. This pic came from this site in the tractor photos.

There is a couple excellent pictures in "Vintage Farm Tractors" by Ralph W Sanders. (I'm sorry to report that, as good as this book is, it does NOT have a picture of the ETD). I've also seen old ads for "RSO" attachements for other old tractor - Fordson maybe even?

I thought I had a site which had pictures of ALL the old Nebraska test tractors, but I couldn't find it again yesterday.

Is that the Samson model on the left or right side of that picture? There was a plowing match with the ETD and the Samson way back in those days, I think it was at Festus Grimes' pumpkin farm down in Oklahoma somewhere. No contest, the Samson was never to be seen again in those parts. I think the Joads took that Samson with them to the Salinas Valley in the Grapes of Wrath saga by John Steinbeck but it wasn't allowed across the border because of some quarantine restrictions. Ah, history is wonderful, thank you for reminding me of that.

Might possibly be the very rare Essex (RSO) Tri-Directional. The model RSO meant "rawhide steering option". It was used in the far north latitudes where regular steering gears would freeze up. I think some of the early north pole explorers used them. Story goes that after the expeditions the tractors were left there and are now buried under snow and ice. Some northern pineapple farmers near Jake's Corner, Yukon were rumored to have salvaged a few and used them for many years. No pictures are available which is a sad thing. In fact, the whole ETD saga is a sad story (along with those of us who keep retelling it).

There is a running Power Horse on display at the Vista, California antique tractor show every year. Every year that I've been there, that is.
