My brother is in the market for a John Deere 4020 and needs a general idea as to what they are bringing at farm sales and dealers.

Finally settled up my never-married Uncle's estate recently. His 4020 Diesel seemed to have gotten lost in the neighborhood over the years.
By using the Sheriff and State's Attorney the estate received $7000 for the tractor and a JD 450 mower from a "neighbor" a few miles away. He claimed my Uncle had given him the 2 items in exchange for taking care of his cows over one winter. Probably the cheapest 4020 I've heard of! (Good lesson here...If you have older relatives without family nearby, don't depend on the "neighbors" to look out for their welfare.)

My neighbor has a nice 4010 w/loader. He wants at least $8,000.00 for it. He bought a new tractor , which more fits his needs. He's taking the 4010 to auction next spring.

The absolute LOWEST price you'll find on one that's running will be at least $8500. Average condition will bag $10,000 to $12,000. "restored" with all the bells and whistles....$15,000 and up. There has never been a BETTER tractor built, regardless of year. I'd venture to say a NICE 4020 will be worth more in 10 years than it is now, where a "new model" might, or it might NOT.

I've seen a few well restored 4020's for sale at asking prices approaching $20,000.... But asking and GETTING are 2 different things!

Hey Indy,

This 4230 I just bought is (supposed to be) an upgraded 4020. Having a 4010 and having had a 4020, I agree. Lots of little things that are more convenient. Have had a chance to get some dry fields and get it out and work it some and I like it.

I agree with your prices generally, but sometimes there is a low ball out there, like my 4010 that I picked up for a song cause the guy had IRS on his case and needed cash fast.....got it the next day.

Glad you're up and around.

I was just trying to find a site that I can't remember by doing a Google Search, and ran across a site I've never seen before called "usedfarmequipment.com". Has a couple there, and one's a '64 asking like $8K or so. Say they just don't use it anymore. Might be one of the deals of the century, and might not. Other than that, are as posted. Have a few of them there.

How's that retirement going there Mark?

The 4020's are expensive enough to be also worth pricing a 6403 or 6603 at your friendly local Deere dealer. Then figuring ALL your short term and long term costs in $$$,time, lost productivity from down time and fuel cost. Food for thought.

Around me in IN. and IL. a good running and working one, $10K - $14K. A fancy one, $$$. All and all, they fetch a good $, but they earn it, and then some.

Iowa- they get 9,000 to 11,000 for a good diesel depending on private sale, auction, or dealer lot.

Depends on hours, gas or diesel, number of remotes, and which model. There are three distinct ages of 4020, those made in 1969 and later (side console) bring a premium. Diesel brings a premium.

Then there's condition of tractor and tires, has a significant effect.
