I am trying to find a provider for internet through sattelite. Only one company had it available and said the installation was $700! Yes, $700!! Monthly fee was $100. I could handle the $100, my company will reimburse me, but the installation seemed a little steep. Any opinions? I don't have access to cable (live 6 miles from town.)

go to www.dtnspeed.net and see if they have anything for your area set up yet, if not, maybe you can become a dealer for them. My brother has it, and I do not know what it cost him, but he seems to be happy with it. Says it faster than my DSL.

Dug,

Here is a link to the satellite service we have.
It too was expensive for initial installation (around 1000.00), but I have both an upload
and download capability. My wife needed those features for trading stocks. The dish is a large oval shape, slightly bigger than the round dish. Our subscription rate is 55.00 per month. In three years we have only had to replace the modem, about 100.00. Hope this helps.

Dug,

$100 a month? You must be trying to get both the TV & Internet together?

I"ve got one system like that and aiming that dish is a bugger. It has to be anchored very stable and "cocked" just right for everything to work okay.

Also, you can find used hardware all over the place for a little of nothing. Just make sure that the previous owner had his bill paid up before he unhooked.

Hope ya get "er figured out; comin" across that phone line is like walking to work every day. It gets ya there, but oh, what a hassle!

Hi Dug, I"ve got the Direcway satellite service myself. It isn"t nearly as fast as cable or DSL, but it is a lot better than dial-up as far as speed. Draw backs: If you"re getting severe weather or thick cloud cover in the direction that the sat dish points or right over head, you will not have service. The support is fair at best. Been on the phone with them over quite a few issues. The standard first response you get from them is "It must be your equipment, because it looks fine on this end." It takes lots of calls and patience if you are having a problem. And looooo ng waits on the phone. Of course, they tell you that the quickest way to contact them if you are having trouble is online, think about that one! You have to disconnect the sat modem every week or so for a few minutes and then plug it back in. If you don"t, you will have trouble accessing sites and/or viewing all the content. Support says it"s because it builds a static charge. Who ever heard of a grounded electrical device building a static charge?! Truth is it gets corrupted or some such thing and has to be reset. Sorry to rant, but as soon as they get decent lines out my way and offer cable or DSL, I"m packing this sat system away (just in case I should really need it again in the future). Even with the high up-front costs I"ve already paid for this sat system, I"d go to cable or DSL in a heart beat if I could. Hope this helps you decide. Ron

Ron,

Do you have the DW4000 or DW6000 receiver? I've had the DW6000 system for approx. a year and have never experienced the unplug every week problem you mention. My system has been pretty reliable but I think a lot of it depends on where you are located in the country, which satellite you're aimed at, and how good a job the installer does in setting up. My only other complaint is that I wish upload speeds were faster. If you spend much time uploading files it is not much, if any, faster than a modem.

Hi Mark, We've had the 6000 since the beginning of our service. When the weather is good, we have a signal strength of around 86. It's very lightly overcast today and it's down to around 70. You're right, uploads are painfully slow. When I happen to get the occasional email that contains some pics, it comes in in about 2-5 minutes. To resend it to someone else takes 5-10 minutes. That's a file of about 2 megs. It really is a lot better than the dial-up we started with here. The same file would have taken about an hour or more using that. But it's still a lot slower than I think it should be for the amount of money we're paying for it.

RoninAR,
I have had Direcway since DirecPC and aside from the weather and static problems with the old system, I have always had a latency problem where you click and it sits there looking at you for sometimes a few seconds before working. When it starts, I have had speeds from 390kbps to 1700kbps. Anyone else had this latency problem???? We are rural with no other broadband options but I got lucky last month! A network guru moved out to our area and was fed up with the options and set up his own wireless tower. No weather problem, no latency problem, a little cereal box size antenna, 700kbps to 1000kbps speeds, a static IP address included and all for $49.00/ month. I am now in heaven!!!

Larry. we have had Direcway sattelite service for a couple of years now, and most of the time it is good. However, it will not work in fog, rain, and snow, or anything that will deflect the signals. Sometimes just overcast skies shut it down It is very slow when the signal strength here drops below 81, and below 79, you can pretty much forget it. Do not let them sell you a 4000 series system, they are not going to support it any more after a while. Also the 4000 series it is old technology. This system wqas extremely susceptible to static elictricity, had to shut down the computer, then the satellite modem box had to be unplugged from the power source almost daily and leave down for 2-10 minutes to bleed off static and then about every 2 weeks the cable connecting the 25 pin cable connecting the transmit modem to the recieve modem would have to be removed and swapped end for end to get it back to working,a Guru from India reccomended that and it worked. is very aggrevating to network, almost impossible, has to be done through the main computer, then to the router. You can read this as major aggrevation, stayed down more than up. The 4000 has to be connected to a land phone line whenever booted up, or rebooted after ANY problem. Haven"t had near the problem with static with the 6000 to date. The 6000 system is very user friendly, works nicely, but still cannot blast through fog and rain.Sometimes you will be down for a 24 hr period of time if the weather is bad foggy and/or rainy. It will network very nicely into a router ahead of your computer and the modem is in the 6000 box with all the pretty blue winking and blinking lights. the 6000 serirs will boot or reboot itself with out a telephone modem being used. Direcway reccomended an upgrade for the 4000 series to the 6000 and when you bought the up grade they did not want the 4000 back, didn"t even send shipping instruction, or address to return it to. When we get through with the commitment which expires this fall we probably will drop this expensive service and take up an Earthlink or a Bell South type services for almost 1/2 the cost. As a whole has been fairly satisfactory, but expensive. Gene Davis

Start using smoke signals like in the old days and at night you can use the drums. Only sucks when it rains but hey, even your sat wont work then. And its a lot cheeper. :-). What i"m trying to say is whait for the phone companie to put in a line because all this hi-tech crap is NOT gonna make you happy. Believe me.

I just tried to figure all this out last week, computer, phone, t v , all by satilite, and I got ahold of Akmed in Bangladesh, and he said " So sorry to bother you at this point in time, but our service will not allow you to be hooking up to our provider for many long times to come" So I decided to wait till something freezes over to get faster hookup. Just an old farmer, Harley
