This is not a tractor question, but while growing up on the farm I know how to handle this. Now I live at the edge of a subdivision. The subdivision has rules for dogs and they are not a problem. The people who live outside the subdivion seam to have a good and still growing selection of free ranging dogs.

I am not one to hurt someone else animal and I don"t really care that the come to visit my yard. But the quanitity of what they are leaving seams to be increasing every day. Do any of these electronic devices work to keep dogs out of an area? If so can someone tell me which one works. We are out in the county and there are no leash laws of any kind. The only thing that would get the law involved is if I used the 12ga 8 shot method to running dogs out of my yard.

Thanks of any advice.

Some people might think its cruel, but if you have a pest dog that you want to get rid of without killing it, this will work. Take the bb's out of a shotgun shell, preferably a .410 or 20ga and fill it up with rock salt. Table salt works the same but does not go very far out of the barrel. One shot of this in the dogs butt will send him yelping and he will never return to where he remembers getting his butt on fire. This also works on pigs, goats, etc.

Always remember that once you complain about an offending dog, the only options you have are through legal channels... If anything happens to one, you will be the first one suspected. A neighbor has a vicious Chow, I made the mistake of calling Animal Control, so all I could do was to keep calling them. Finally, a year & dozens of calls later, she does keep the demonic critter up. Animal Control officer told me she finally had to threaten to have owner arrested if dog was loose.

I love dogs and i love other peoples dogs. And me too had two free ranging sweet doggies wandering my farm and i loved them.... until they started chasing my chickens. Then i stopped loving them. So one day they came along and i let out my big mean sun of a husky mix and they never came back again. Dont know where they are but my dog did not eat for a week. Wonder why... Just get a good old big farm dog, train him to stay within your yard and he will get rid of all pests including other dogs.

Are you absolutly sure there are no leash laws? Here in oregon there are leash laws even in the country. I hope you dont poison or harm the pets in anyway, it's not the animals fault, its the owners fault. I'm not sure, but I recall there being a thread or article somewhere about a common chemical that humans cant smell but is very offensive to dogs and was used to deter the dogs from depositing in a persons yard. I wish you good luck in your venture. And if you are going to shoot something, shoot the owner, at least that way you'll be "respected"? in jail.

Thanks for your suggestions. I know the people who own the dogs and if they put them in a pen or tied them up then they would probably not get any food or water like they should.

There is no one out hear to get help from on something like this.

I might try what we did to keep the cyoties and dogs out of the cow pasture. Put a donkie in my front yard, she always kept the dogs away and finally taught the cows how to do this them selves. Several times our dog would follow me to feed a round bale of hay, he would have to get under the tractor to keep the cows from stomping him into the ground. But the donkie would leave a bigger mess in the yard so I guess I will try something else.

Thanks.

First of all, if you live in a subdivision, you may want to check your local laws about discharging a firearm within a certain amount of ft./yards from an occupied dwelling. It would be a shame to get a healthy fine if one of your nieghbors called the law.
Second point. If a visit with the dogs owners does not get the problem solved bait them into your garage/shed, what ever and call the humane society to come get'em.
Out here were I live we have an understanding amongst us. If your dog is being a bonehead, tell the owner. If the owner does not take the clue it is the SSS method. But my nieghbors and I all understand that.

a few years ago I heard a 22 rifle go off one night. Next morning I found a 200 lb buck in my back yard missing his head. I know who shot it but I could not prove it, all I could do is go down to my fathers, get my tractor, come back load it up and take it to his farm and get bury it. I might have been able to call someone else to get rid of it, but I did not want to wait any longer than I needed to.

Soon afterwords I put up a 6' fence around my back yard blocking off this neighbors view.

You can just about get away with anything in this part of Alabama as long no one sees you do it.

This summer I had a territorial misunderstanding with the local coyote. He apparently disapproved of my going into his woodlot with my golf cart and trailer to dump wood and lath torn from the house I'm renovating.

I kept finding piles of scat all the way along my path into the woods. Finally, he started depositing right at the coupler of the trailer, where I was sure to discover it.

I fixed him. I urinated on each of the piles as I found it. Scheduled a rest stop whenever I took a load of scrap back to the recycling pile. Then there was no more problem.

Maybe you need to mark your territory.

Now, if the dogs were getting into my sheep--it would be a completely different matter...!!!! My dogs, or someone elses doesent make them look any different in the scope, if they are in the sheep...

With all these macho idiot comments I want to make some things clear.

1) Poisoning dogs is not acceptable
2) Do not use a rat trap. I hope you meant mouse trap. Big difference.
3) One pump on a bb gun is nothing. Good idea. Pellet gun is something different. I have a real nice pellet gun from when I was a kid. Want me to shoot you with it?
4) As for the gun slingers, I wish you would come on my property so I could defend myself.

Why you would need to seriously hurt a dog or joke around about it is beyond me. Must be compensating for something.

To the others . . . good ideas. DavidA, you know what to do, but start by talking to the dog owners.

My 2 cents

its pretty clear you never had dogs costing you money by killing and tearing up your livelyhood.im not compensating for anything except knowing what to do when a dog is ruining your livelyhood..i didnt think personal insults were allowed here..just because you have to kill a dog doesnt mean you want to or enjoyed it.

Thats differen.Im sure if they start tearing up livestock then the law may be clear that you CAN shoot them legally.I dont think at that point they are anyones pet.there are "coydogs" also that kill other stuff.Lets be rational.Saw a mud covered thing in back of my place and I dont know what the heck this thing was.Looked pretty shootable at the time.

Different people in different parts of the country all handle things in different ways. What is acceptable some places is not in others.
As for you wishing the "gunslingers" over to your property so you can "defend" yourself shows me your just as big a fool as you make them out to be.

In no part of the country is it acceptable to:

1) Cause a dog to die slowly and painfully through renal failure by poisoning.
2) Shatter a dogs muzzle or teeth with a rat trap.
3) Shoot a dog with a PELLET gun.

#4 and the insults was a result of me getting all worked up. I apologize.

We're talking dogs that don't know any better pooping in someone's lawn. We're not talking dogs attacking your children or your livelihood.

Yes we are the humans [the ones with the smarter brains].You cant hurt the dogs. I agree with Joe,however what about New Farmers idea about the paintball gun .the owners will know the dog tresspased and its made to shoot humans and cattle .thats seems humane enough. You guys with just shoot it are forgeting thats its someone elses pet or family member. You go tell the little kids you killed their dog, tough guys.

I wonder what your kids are like. You apparently have little respect for propert rights. If you care about the mutt you would be willing to impose limits in their running-instead someone else has to raise your dogs (or is it kids) for you.
SSS- when the owner comes around ask them -well I guess the dog must have gotten loose because I know you would not just let it run on others property.

I agree with some of what you said but I must add to your comments here. First of all I have a problem with a neighbor who allows his doberman to run around. This dog is not in my yard but is at the front of my driveway which is 900 ft. from my house. I sent him a letter saying in short that I dont like seeing his dog running loose and IF his dog bites me or my kid I will sue the *ell out of him. I WILL shoot that dog if it corners me or my kid or my wife, No Questions Asked....period. Second of all why do people think that they can allow their dogs to run loose, the liabilty is outrageous if the dog bites someone. And if I have to pick up dog *rap that belongs to my neigbors dog then that is unacceptable and the guy doesnt deserve to have the dog in the first place.

I agree with Mike.. SSS We had a pack of dogs from the other side of the ridge coming over and chasing down deer. I took out the two leaders, and haven't had any problem since. Believe it or not, I killed them with #8 shot 20 guage. I was only looking to heat up their fur, but at 25 feet, that #8 shot left a nice hole

Get yerself a spring powered BB gun (Red Ryder style). DON'T get an AIR GUN or a C02 gun as they can cause damage. With the Red Ryder, just stick it out your kitchen window, and give em a ZING in the rear quarter. They will yelp...and turn tail. Dogs learn pretty quick to make their deposits elsewhere when there are "bees" stinging them in the butt everytime they go to a certain yard.
These guns make no discernable noise, will do no harm unless you shoot the dog in the eye, and are pretty darn accurate from a distance of 50 feet or so....if you keep the barrel well oiled.
Good luck

the mouse trap thing reall works. Animal control after picking them up a few times will also work. Also try talking to the neighbors probably the best way tell htem you like their dogs but dont want them pooping all over your yard. if there decent people they should key word is should respect your property and waht you want or dont want on your property

Harbor Freight sells a motion detector activated impulse sprinkler. This is marketed as a deer repellent but may help you. When it senses an animal it ativates and sprays the area with water for a short period. Saw the same type of thing on TV once and it seemed to work well. There are also granulated pet repel products that are likely worth a try.

Nothing like someone else"s dog to tick you off.

does the town or county have an animal control unit? that way you are on the right side of the law, not that i'm against breaking the law in certain cases but with a subdivision involved it would probably be best.

No animal control in this area. The people in the subdivision are OK. The ones outside are the ones with all of the loose dogs.

My wife and I had 2 black labs where we used to live, but they had 100 acres to roam and the closest neighbor was over a mile away.

We were able to leave them there with the people moving in when we left. I was not about to bring these 2 animals and fence them into a 1/4 acre back yard.

Baited rat trap worked for me. To wack them on the nose, not the leg type of trap. Be sure to tie it to some thing. Don't want them to take it home. A pump up pellet gun...only a pump up type that you can put a light charge into. 3 strokes on mine. Just enough to sting but not penetrate.

I like the mouse trap idea, I have not thought of that. I do use my pump pellet gun when I get the chance, I am gone to much to do much good with that.

I am about ready to get my other pump gun out, it only takes 1 pump. But I know I cannot do that and my 30-30 may look simular to a Red Rider BB gun but it makes a little more noise.

They will catch them in mouth and run around with them, even the exploding ones.I don't knmow ho wthey can stand it,,but they come back for more. Have to put them inside when we do fireworks . I also used to have a german shepard shop dog. I could not weld or use torch unless he was chained up , he would bite and attack the flames. He would even freak out over cig lighters , even if you pressed button to were gas was flowing he'd hear that and start going nuts,,,lol strange dog ..Good fire alarm though

my freind had some serious dog problems ,he was out in the country. he too alot of gravey and leftovers and mixed some antifreeze in it and put it way out back the way they usually came. it got rid of em,but really quite drastic.ive found there isnt really way way to keep em out without getting drastic.a pellet gun may keep em away when the dogs see you,and they will learn from the mouse traps.if you had a motion sensored whistle that would hurt their ears that may work, but seems to cruel for someone to market a sell..around here we put up with other peoples dogs as long as they dont do damage,if they do they get shot..
