Have a 92 Chevy fullsize pickup. Lefthand brakelight will not work after using LH turnsignal unless I push stalk up (not returning to middle). Wipers are goofy, one day intermittent works o.k. as well as solution. Next day turn to intermittent and wipers stay on continuous and won"tshut off, solution won"t work. Cruise control stopped working 2 years ago. Am I in for a rude awakening when I disect the column or will some contact cleaner and some TLC getirdone. Truck has 192,000 miles so I don"t want to spend a lot to fix it.

Thanks in advance!

my take on it since having problems with turn sincle canceling and cruise and wipers etc it is in your switch there in your sterring column. not hard at all esp since you dont have an air bag no matter if i disconnect it and if i am carful i always get fearful when working on a sterring column w/an airbag. the easiest way to do it sint to pull the sterring wheel off. i will explain things as if you were sitting in the drivers seat. the trim panel above where your legs go will come out/off then there will be either 3/4 or 15/16th nuts and the steering column will literall drop down *******************************the gear shift selector is attached on top of this can be a huge pain if you break it to go up into the dash to replace or if you pull it out of the guage cluster can be a huge pain*********** loosen the nuts SLIGHTLY (they dont give you any extra at all) it is attached to the top of the sterring colum w/a little silver clip slides off its a little white "wire" looking thing undo that and take those 2 nuts off. the steering column will drop down and theres a 2 piece plastic cover (2 piece one on top one on bottom) just snaps together pry apart gently once those 2 plastic pieces are off the switch is held on there w/screws or 1/4inch bolt screws take 4 of them off that whole switch will come out after you unplug the wires. you take it to a dealer and junk yard get a new one. theres no sense trying to take it apart and replace it if having problems with the wipers cruise etc if it were jsut the turn singal canceling you can replace springs that are inside of it but no sense if having other problems. word of warning going to a junk yard you never know what you are getting if it will work or not. most likely will if vehicle got rear ended etc but for how long before the springs in that breaks etc.

rotton robert did a good job with explaining what could be wrong. the column is fairly simple if you take your time and have the right tools. the center of the steering wheel pops off. take the nut off and then you need a steering wheel puller. then you need a press that screws on the center shaft to push the plate down to remove the snap ring on the shaft. remember what order you pulled parts off in. the lever will seperate from the switch once your in there. the switch is held on by three screws. the hardest part is "fishing" the wire up and down the column. i have always removed the hard shell connector to pull the wires through. a coat hanger works well. the multifunction switch is not your wiper or cruise problem though. good luck,

Turn signal/hazzard switch is likely bad (dirty).

GM had a recall on the circuit boards in the wiper MOTOR causing symptoms similar to your's, but perhaps that was just 1994 and up. (Come to think about it, I had a 1992 Suburban that had the bad circuit board ib the wiper motor, so it must go back that far.)

The cruise control "stalk" and attached wiring commonly fail.

You very likely have 3 separate problems.

First problem: Wiper problem is in the printed circuit board on the wiper motor. There was a recall bulletin issued for that by GM.Can be replace very easily.

Second problem: Replaceing the turn signal switch can be done by a reasonably mechanically talented person but can be very frustrating. Buy a shop manual at a parts store.

Third problem: Cruise control could be anything. Lack of vacuum or a clutch/brake switch bad.

RR,

There's no vacuum involved in the cruise system of a GM pickup of that year. Cruise is an electronic servomotor.
