i know this is off topic but i have a 1997 chevy blazer and i xcant get it to start. i know its getting gas but i cant tell if its getting spark. i was wondering if anyone knew any tricks on how to test the spark plug without having it in the vehical to see if it is still good? i think i just need plugs and wires but am seeing if i can get by on it for another week in order to get my income tax check back. i also dont have anyone around to help me work on it because everyone in my family is at work till after it gets dark so ya kinda hard to work in the dark. well thanks for anything that might help me.

Does not sound like plugs/wires to me. It would not just stop running if that were the circumstance. By any chance are you using a newly made key? If it does not have the computer chip in it, the truck won"t run. Sounds more like an electrical or computer issue to me.

Always keep at least one beat screwdriver in your vehicle. If it wont run stick that in a plug wire end and hold near the motor. Thats your roadside spark test.An old plug will work also.Wires wont fail instanly they will leak causing misfires. Now to test not in that truck you need another motor, lawn mower could tell. Its unlikely a V8 fouled all plugs suddenly. It takes three things fuel,Somewhat near correct ratio[air],reasonable compression, somewhat timed spark to make any gas motor run.Oh Good luck.

How many miles are on it? Are you sure your fuel pump is pumping enough? Does it crank over?

Yes, if you have spark check your fuel pressure! I had this trouble with my sisters 97 blazer this spring, it wouldn't start. The injectors need (I think) somewhere between 40-60lbs of pressure to work. I only had 30

its getting fuel and i just took the cap off it and it was dirty so im trying to see if thats what is wrong with it. the blazer has 130000 on it and had a fuel pump at around 90000 put on it. i think i am gonna try cleaning the cap and rotor and putting it back together and giving it a go. thanks all

I would check the fuel pressure. The 97 has a CPFI Center port fuel injection and runs a high PSI. If pressure drops the injectors will not work. The injectors are located under the manifold and it has 6 lines running to each cylinder with poppet valves ion each. I am assuming your working with the 4.3 Vortec? The earlier MPFI was a much better system. The only notable firing problems are with the distributor cap. It crosses around the leads inside and they are bad for cracking. Another piece of advice is, if you change the cap, change the wires plugs, and rotor too. Do not change one without the other.

Jd,

If you have bad wiring or a weak battery, your injectors may not be getting the voltage they need to properly work.
The distributor module may be bad also. You need a good test light and volt meter to check it all out, otherwise it's a guessing game.

If the plugs are wet with gas or have some oily black coating they could be fouled. There must be a sight like Champion or something that will show fouled plugs.Mechanics dont test them in another motor. They can tell by looking at them. Before you disassemble your distributor yuo must check spark.See if your corner gas station has a Champion plug tester.Oh I forgot there is no more corner gas stations with freindly people.Nevermind.

This is kind of similar to what the others have said above, that it might be fuel-related: Have you changed the fuel filter? If the fuel filter is limiting flow, that will affect the fuel pressure and possibly prevent the engine from starting. I'm not sure where it is on the '97 model, but on my '93 it's inside the frame rail, on the driver's side, just in front of the rear wheel. New fuel filter will cost you 10 or 12 dollars and just may do the trick. Good luck, and let us know how you make out.

P.S. : If it gets below freezing where you are, have you given the fuel tank a dose of DryGas (or IsoHeet, or whichever one you prefer)? Water in fuel line, even if only a little, will raise the dickens... Just a thought...

If you have any doubt about the plugs, buy new ones, not all that expensive and might help on power, starting, economy, etc. I always use a little bit of anti-seize on each plug. Good luck, Mike
