I have a 1973 Sears ST-16 garden tractor with 16 hp Tecumseh. Maybe I can help.

What do you need to know?

I was wanting to know about what years they made them, if they are pretty good tractors, about what one is worth and how big they are. Thank You for your reply.

Not sure of the years they were built. Mine was bought new by a friend's father in 1973.

I have had problems with the electronic ignition system on mine. This must have been "state of the art" in 1973 but to replace the ignition (spark)module is about $100 and the stator (alternator) which fits under the flywheel is about $200. The rectifier (regulator) for the alternator is another $100.

A running unit in good condition would be worth about $400-$500 just for the items listed above. Alternatively, you could be looking at that much or maybe more (with labor) to get a unit running if there is a problem with the ignition system.

The overhead valve engine designs are prone to leak oil from the seals around the valve push rod tubes. However, this is a fairly simple fix but does require removing the head and replacing inexpensive O-rings on each end of the tubes.

These units weigh about #250. They have lots of power and good heavy transmissions. (Three speeds forward plus reverse. (Hi-Lo range gives 6 speeds and 2 reverse).
