Went to a "Talent Show" tonight at our rural elementary school. While there I saw a miniture pig. Now this pig was interesting. Well trained, did tricks, the whole nine yards.

Now the kids want a pig, and I wouldn't mind one. We have 2 labs running the land and my brother next door (100 yards away) has 4 labs running loose. Provided the labs doen't eat the pig, what are the chances of a pig surviving running loose? I wouldn't think coyotes would present a problem with all the dogs, what do you guys think? Any experience with a miniture pig?

One thing about a pig as a family pet, if you decide later you've made the wrong decision, a nice barbeque makes things right again. Much harder to do that with a dog or a cat (although in some places it would be OK) and somewhat difficult with goldfish or hamsters.

The pig will root up all of your, and your neighbor's flower bulbs. You will be training the dogs to chase the pig.

teach the dogs to do tricks, you'll thank me. If you let a pig run loose he will soon forget all he is taught, ("the manners of a pig") and providing he did live and you trained the puppies not to eat him. All you would have is a wild pig....and what do you want with that?

Funniest excuse for lateness in 34 years as a teacher?

One of my brighter, university-bound female students was two hours late for her final English exam. She came in, flustered, offering this note from the office.

"Had to take her pig to the vet."

This girl loved her livestock. During lambing season she was completely out of it worring about her flock. Her Vietnamese pot-bellied pig was a particular favourite, and on the day in question she suspected that her horse had kicked it or stepped on its leg. Turned out the pig was fine, just limping to get attention.

One word of caution about pot-bellied pigs. They like to eat and they discover that humans are trainable. By the time this girl went off to university, her pet weighed 435 pounds.

If you go to the Royal Winter Fair, The Sportsman Show and some other shows at the CNE in Toronto. Purina Dog food puts on a dog show, timed trials around an obstacle course etc. We were all impressed by the smarter dogs like the Shepherds, poodles and Border Collie/ Border Collie cross breeds. Then for a twist, some joker showed up with a pot bellied pig. The pig wasn't real fast but unlike the dogs he never made a mistake and lost points. When tallied up that hog out performed most of the dogs. Back in about 99 at the Royal, the Police Canine unit showed up with trained dogs and officers. They were showing off the high quality training, obedience and control. Kids were allowed to pet the dogs. Guess who got bit in the face in front of about 1500-2500 people. I don't know how they kept that one out of the news papers.

As I remember it, a pigs sense of smell is even more presice than a dogs. The natural gas companies were using pigs to find gas leaks underground. At least they did a while back. Dont know if they still do or not. I wish I could have been at that fair, that sounds like it was a real fun show.
