Just began working on a Waukesha 817 cu. in gas engine from the world war two era. Do any of you guys, or gals, know anything about them. Are parts available? What were they used for? This one is in a military vehicle that I have just begun a restoration on.

Fixerupper,

A friend of mine bought all the waukesha

parts that C V Foster had left when they

were closing last year . Parts are all here in

a 40 ft van , but we have not started sorting

yet. I did see some large dia sleeves ( over

6 inch ) and large valves. Many guides ,springs

idler bushings ,and some cams.

Weather is too miserable to get the trailer

set up and shelves up.

I regularly attend ASTM tetsing engine meetings with Waukesha people. They are now called Dresser Industries and the Wauakesha engine division is a sub set of Dresser. They still build a host of large engines. I have asked about tractor parts for instance and they always say that they never really changed many parts. Inshort if you get in touch with them you should be able to get new parts for almost any of the engines, unless it was a real oddball. Check out there website.

Waukesha sold the rights for the smaller engines such as used by Oliver. The 817 was sold as 2 different models also. The older ones were a 145XX The later ones are known as an F-817.

Some with heads for two spark plugs were used in fire trucks (dual ignition. I have pressure tested a few sets. I had no problem getting gaskets and valves but that was probably 8 years ago. What parts are you looking for. Remember sometimes military engines use what is known as military standard parts.

Here goes a second try on the second post. This engine was rebuilt, put in the vehicle, the vehicle was driven across the parking lot, and it was parked without being run for six years. About two years ago my friend bought it and we got it running. It ran rough and had blowby but after awhile the blowby was down to a wisp and the engine roared like a lion. He drove it up and down the road periodically to try to find any bugs in it before we started the restoration. Last fall the engine wanted to seize up on three occasions. Each time he would shut it down immediately and it would start back up right away, but the third time it came back to life on only 5 1/2 cylinders and it was puffing blowby. We pulled the heads yesterday and the cylinders are badly scored with two of them having rust pits. The piston tops do not have a new appearance so I don't know what they meant by doing a 'rebuild' on it. The rust pits are probably from six years of condensation from our Iowa humidity. The seller said they made the sleeves for it and they 'turned the pistons down', whatever that means. The oil pressure is a consistent 50-60 lb so the bottom end should be good. This engine has the one spark plug heads.

Hi Fixerupper

I didn't realize that the previous owners had done the rebuild on that rig. If they said they turned the pistons I wonder if they did it in house.

If they did I would bet the pistons were machined round instead of eliptical as they should have been. Also wonder what clearances the pistons had. That may very well be K's problem right there.

Hope you guys can scrounge enough parts from your stock on hand to make that rig work.

jt

Hi John! They did all of the work and it was in the building to the south as I understand. Yes, there are plenty of 'parts at hand'. Just don't know if they are good ones.

I don't know there my last post went to but I will wait awhile to re-post in case it is hung up somewhere. Anyway, I have done six military restorations on ww 2 era vehicles and the real guts of the engines have been the same as civilian. What is sometimes different is the carbs and ignition. Waterproof ingition and crankcase ventilation (where so you think your modern pcv valve came from on your car?) didn't come around until Korea.
