I got to see a JD 401 B that is for sale. It is a complete tractor, except the motor is apart. It is a 4 cyl diesel. It had a water leak into the oil. Is it possible a liner seal is leaking? Is this model a dependable tractor? I can have it for 500.00. I looked in my parts catalog (Value Bilt Tractor) and nothing is listed for this model, is it not a popular model? Thanks Stan

That sounds like the deal of the day ! You better go get it. That engine is the same as a AG tractor maybe something like a 2020 check the block casting numbers against AG tractor parts books to verify. Those wet sleeve engines are know to leak coolant into the oil because of lack of maintenance it usually doesn't hurt them much if caught early.

401b same as 2440...least the 2440 made in usa..mine has 219 engine 8 speed with 8 forwards and 8 reverses..and yes i would buy it today where is it..use mine to run a 9 ft kuhn mower...check to see if it has a pto and lift arms..if not worth that in parts, and yes can get water in oil with hole in sleeve..have nice day may god bless

It does have a pto, and I assume it has lift arms, as it has a disc hooked to it so it should have the lift arms. seams like when you look at something there is always something that is missed. It does not have a bucket on the front. This is in Clifornia. I think it was used for road maint. Was the 219 engine usede in other JD models? Thanks for the info, you guys came through again. Stan
