We have an @ 1978 International truck with a big block V8. When you get it started it will set and idle almost perfect then once in a while it will backfire and blow flames out the exhaust and go right in ideling almost perfect. When you try and move it it has no power like it should and backfireing continues. Can anyone direct me on what I can do to fix it? Thanks.

I had a 75 IHC with a 404 CID engine like that once.(Glad it finally went south) It would just decide to quit in the most inconvenient places.Hired help refused to drive it. Electronic control unit, I though. Kept a new one on hand and changed it out by the side of the road more than once. Sometimes, all it took was to let it set for a while and then it would be good to go again. Finally died in town. Nothing I did would get it to fire again. Found the problem to be the distributor. One week later, I found a replacement distributor(NAPA) in California and it was the last one in the world, I think considering the price. $400 or something like that.

Pertronix makes a unit for MOST of those "already electronic ignition" distributors that replaces the Holley stuff IN the distributor, and on the firewall AND lots of wiring with just a little module that mounts inside the distributor. PROBLEM SOLVED.

Backfiring out the exhaust is "almost" always caused by the primary ignition.

Check for lean mixture. This can sometimes be done by using the choke. If the choke is automatic, a little improvising will be needed. In most cases, backfireing, as you described, is caused by a lean mixture.

Back fires , lack of power? Possible valve lash tight, possible retarded ignition, possible crossed ignition wires to wrong plugs. A shop had same symptoms on a Ford car after tuneup- mechanic helper who did plugs used a Chev wire pattern, didn't look at manifold for ignition pattern. I changed wires to correct pattern and car ran good- got a beer out of it. RN

Has the ignition timing been set, using the correct procedure?

Has a compression check been done?

Does it have the Holley electronic igntion system?

The IH V8 is timed to #8 cylinder. Badly retarded timing would act like that.

Just an idea, it sounds like an engine that I did one time that had a bad condenser. Would idle ok, but could not get any revs. Worth a try,
